RE-BLOG - PROPERTY OF Anna Banana Kruchten for AR Contest

Official 2017 Blog JUMPSTART Challenge - Enhance YOUR Personal Best

One of the best ways to learn how to blog is to know and understand Copyright Rules. This is a re-blog from Anna Banana Kruchen  who provided AR Community Guidelines and the information everyone must know about plagiarism from one of the greatest members on ActiveRain this platform has ever had, Lenn Harley.  Lenn was affectionately known as "The Copyright Queen." I pray everyone read it the first, second, third time, and as often as you can to know and understand what it means and why you can't do that!

If you are a licensed Real Estate Agent, and a member of the National Association of REALTORS®, you are held to a higher standard. In the court of law, there is not excuse for plagiarism. Care must be taken when writing and advertising. Anna was very clear on this issue too. PLEASE BE SURE TO GO TO ANNA'S BLOG AND COMMENT - A FEATURE FOR ANNA WOULD BE TERRIFIC TOO!

To those who have been pioneers on ActiveRain, like Lenn Harley and Anna, we salute you. We honor you and we are thankful there are Ambassadors and people like Lynn B. Friedman who help guide us to become the best in our profession.

"You don't want to become guilty of plagiarism by letting someone else's

words get inadvertently mixed in with your own. If you do feel the need

to paste in a block of research while you're writing, be sure to highlight

the copied text in a different color so you can go back and rewrite it entirely later."

--- Gayle Lynds

Two of the smartest things I learned from a Teacher I worked for as a Teacher's Assistant in Special Education was: 1) When in doubt don't; 2) Never assume anything. Those phrases stuck with me and I hope they stick with you too.

ActiveRain has clear  Community Guidelines.  If you're new to the community and haven't read them yet, I highly recommend that you do so.  And if you're an 'oldie' around here and have read them lately it might be a good idea to so so as well.  Personally I haven't read the guidelines for a year or so and it was helpful to do so this morning -  just for a quick review.

ActiveRain Community Guidelines - Respect Copyrights

The  guideline that stood out to me today is Respect Copyrights!

Respect Copyrights. Only upload content and

images that you have the right to us commercially.

Now that seems pretty clear, doesn't it?  Now I am no expert on this subject, by a long shot. But I do know, for sure, if it's not your photograph or content don't use it and pass it off as yours. Just don't do it!

When I first began my ActiveRain journey I really didn't know much about copyrights (well let's rephrase that - I knew diddly squat).  But thanks to Lenn Harley I learned a lot, and if fact she kind of scared me with some of the facts of what could happen if you violate copyright law. She has been dubbed the 'Copyright Queen' and folks, I would go back and read some of her posts if I were you if you're new to blogging and/or you just don't know much about copyrights!  You won't see Lenn in the rain as she's retired and probably enjoying her time finding a new place to fish or shoot. Thanks Lenn for teaching us all about copyright laws - and how to handle things properly.

Lenn Harley Copyrights

So I hope that you're not scared at this point about copyrights. Well maybe I do!   Scared just enough to be smart enough to read some of Lenn's posts!  Enjoy learning!

People use the lame excuse: but I found it on the internet. they think they can copy whatever. I see people on Active Rain, for example, insert complete videos swiped off of You Tube, or photos of celebrities that you know they have no permission to steal, yet they do it.

Patricia I miss Lenn and the talks her and I use to have on the phone.  Lenn was the copyright Queen as you so correctly stated, and as far as I am concerned she was the Queen of AR.

Copyright law is very tricky. It can boil down to intent, I'm told by attorneys. However, it's always a good idea to err on the side of caution. Anna and Lenn know their stuff.

Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD - Thank you for this wise advice. From this answer, I would think the law would not rule in one's favor if the intent was malicious and intentionally proved without a doubt this type of individual was trying to claim something as their own or make a false claim that they were someone they are not, i.e., a war hero who served our country and was actually booted out with a dishonorable discharge during basic training.

For someone to take a chance with copy and paste without concern for being caught or worse is foolish.  Lenn was experienced at it for the litigation she had to endure and won.

Funny but, this is the topic I wrote my post on too!  It should be posted tomorrow or Monday but, Lenn definitely came to mind when I was writing mine too!

Hope you're having a great weekend, Patricia Feager!
