Today I went to the ultimate grocery store, Foodland Farms at its new location in the Ala Moana Center in Honolulu. Words can hardly describe the variety of local foods, freshly made specials, and different food counters and sections in its large and airy space.
The produce looks as fresh as if it was just brought in from the farm.
You wouldn't know this fruit had to come thousands of miles to be here.
The meat counter offers a big selection of prepared items; just take it home and cook it.
But what makes Foodland so extra special?
Its new Concierge Service.
Beth Kunitomo, Lead Concierge for Foodland Farms at Ala Moana Center took me all around the store. Between tasting some of the specialties, she told me about the various services the concierge offers:
1. After shopping, you can leave your groceries in their fridge and freezer until you have finished other shopping at Ala Moana Center; or, if you work nearby, just come back at the end of the day to pick them up.
2. You can also call in your order, and they will have it ready for pickup whenever you say. Your orders, by the way, can include party platters, floral displays and everything else available in the store.
3. Eventually they will even have DELIVERY service; call in your order and it will be delivered to you. This can only be a smash hit because there are several luxury condominiums being built and already up in the area, including the new one right in Ala Moana Center itself.
When Beth heard that I absolutely love Poke, she took me over to the counter where they make several different kinds fresh each day.
Beth also pointed out that there is a wine bar in the middle of the store which, when we did our tourwas not open y et. Here they have Charcuterie platters in addition to the wine and beers they serve. Or customers can take their own selections from the store to eat there. How fun is that? Having lunch at your grocery store including a Kraft beer or glass of wine? Gives a whole new meaning to "I'm grocery shopping."
And you know what our dessert would be? Mochi Ice Cream. Have you ever had any? They give out samples and I tried Mochi Strawberry Dark Chocolate Chip. Absolutely sinful.
Interested in Shave Ice or other quick refreshment or foods when you are on the go but don't want to stop at a restaurant? Foodland Farms has several counters to choose from and here are a couple:
And, finally, looking for a gift that is "local made"? There's a whole section for that.
You absolutely need to explore this fabulous "grocery store" for yourself.
