The Wolf Moon

By
Industry Observer with ARFCO Media

Finishing up the day at our Tacoma office, it’s January 11, 2017, going on 5:30 pm. I’m headed across town when MY OH MY the first full moon of the year is rising and totally glorious! It’s full, it’s huge, it’s super bright, it’s magnificent in the cloudless sky.

The Wolf Moon. Tacoma, WA. 1/11/2017

I want to hurry, thinking about a perfect place on Hilltop to get my shot. But it’s the afternoon commute and I’m hitting every single friggin' red light there is along the way. When I arrive at the ‘perfect’ location there’s now one small cloud in the sky. Guess where? :O) So this ain't 'the' shot, but what the hay, it's a cool scene this evening on South 21st and Tacoma Ave as I’m headed down the hill for the 509 and home.

Growing up in these parts we always called it by the indigenous nickname, the Wolf Moon.

Thanks Myrl Jeffcoat !.. Love the term, Wolf Moon. I can hear them howling on a snowy cold crispy night away from the fire in the dark!

Hi Jeff Dowler !.. I hadn't thought about the Moon Wolf for a long time either. But as I was coming off the hill towards this photo location it came to me. Man oh man, it was really cold, but such a beautiful evening. You too! Have a great weekend! Thanks!

Hi Rene - I learned something new in your blog.  I didn't know the first full moon of the year was the wolf moon.

Hey Grant Schneider ... Me too. I remembered the Wolf part, then, you know me, I had to journey on... The indienous peoples of our north nicknamed it the Wolf Moon because the wolf's howled on those mid winter cold snowy nights in January not far from camp and the fire. Love the images that conjurs! Thanks!

The RIGHT CHARLOTTE REALTOR!

The moon looks a bit like a painting in an eerie way. Very cool Wolf Moon. Glad you took the time to take the shot while you were stuck in traffic!

Hi Rene, great shot - and surprising to not see any snow when you are North of us by a couple of miles.  I (John) did not realize it was a full moon that night, and when a huge slab of snow slid off our house with a loud rumble, I had to step outside to see the result - and there was the big 'ol moon.  Do you suppose it caused that slab of snow to get moving?  John and Kat

:O) !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Endre Barath, Jr. !!!!!! Too funny, of course I remember Wolfman Jack! :O) ... Thanks! I'm like resonating with "wolf moon" this week, having fun drifting thoughts about legend and ancient and family and the river of life. I love what "wolf moon" conjurs.

Thanks Brian England !! I love scenes like this too... As usual, it's 90% luck and 10% (when you discover it on your camera roll) some talent.

Rene,

I think you portrayed the wolf moon in the most artistic way! Why be ordinary? Be extraordinary! Thanks for the education - I never heard of a Wolf Moon until now and the definition makes sense too.
