Arch St downtown Searcy AR historic photo

Recognize this street?

It is a great view from the corner of Arch and Spring looking toward the First Methodist Church. Looking carefully you can see Security Bank on the sign, I believe.  The date is not certain but it must have been several years ago.  Car guys can tell the year by the cars in the picture.

It also appears to be a filling station down on the corner in front of the church. Historic pictures are so interesting and enjoyable.  Guess I need to visit the area and take a picture of the way it is now.  Tell us about it if you remember it!

Barbara S. Duncan This reminds me of Mayberry, RFD. And goes back to an era when folks didn't lock their front doors and manners were taught at home.

My family's dry cleaners was at the end of Arch on the left! Miss the memories there as a child!

Good morning Barbara. What a great old photo. Kind of hard to see the cars but I love it.

That was the Acme Dry Cleaners. I know because the steam pipes poured dry cleaning tainted steam into my front yard when I lived in the house behind the filling station in 1943. There was a Chinaberry tree  next to the sidewalk and i would climb up in the tree and drop chinaberries on unsuspecting people walking below. The address was 303 N. Main.

Good times then when I could walk downtown to scavavage the dumpsters behind Sterlings and other stores. Walking to the Rialto was a breeze also. The library was just a hop, skip, and  a jump away.

Sharon, sounds as if we discovered the name of the dry cleaners....Acme.  Don Thompson was the neighbor.  Did you read his comment?

Don, you have had a charmed childhood!  I can imagine the fun you had so close to town.  Do I have a picture of that house?  My mother used to hate chinaberry trees because they made such a mess.

Barbara, I wish I had a picture of that house. The best I can do is using two pics I can pinpoint the Chinaberry tree and I believe from the Pershing Filling Station I can pinpoint the house. The Persinng station was near Arch and across from the church as described here.

Don, those pictures are great.  I think I know where the house was. Here's the look of the street today.  I liked it better before all the beautification flower beds cut into the traffic lanes.  Arch Street Searcy AR today

I opened my first checking account at this First Security Bank building in about l964 or l965. Then, in l970 I went to work at First Security Bank in the new building on the corner of Race and Spring Street. Lots of growing up memories around the square in Searcy, AR

Down on the right was Central Barber Shop, where I always got my hair cut. There's a barber shop still there today, I think. I live in Jonesboro now, but seems a few months ago when I was in Searcy I saw one there, I believe in the same location.
