Libraries (and the Books, Magazines, Video-media, and People therein) Change Lives!

One of the great assets to any community, and certainly to Vancouver Washington and the greater Southwest Washington area is the local Library. We are fortunate to be served by the Fort Vancouver Regional Library system, which has many branch locations throughout the region.

In large part the Library is funded by tax levy, and thankfully reflects strong community support.  However, not all programs are tax funded - one is the Summer Reading Program that receives funds from the FVRL Foundation; which in turn relies on fundraisers such as the BOOKAPALOOZA!  So what is contained in that fun-sounding name?  This time around we're told there are over 20,000 surplus items in the form of Hardback Books, Paperback Books, Videos and Audio-Vinyl - but, MOSTLY BOOKS!

The first such event in 2017 runs from January 12 - 14; 9am to 6pm.  We stopped by on Thursday to "beat the rush" and scored some great books to enjoy during this wintry weather.

FVRL Bookapalooza January 2017 - Outside the HQ Building FVRL HQ Building -  Vancouver WA Jan. 2017

During our time there the pickins (books priced so low we felt like we were stealing them!) were pretty good, with paperback books priced at fifty-cents; and hard-backed books at one-dollar ($1).

Of note, they did a pretty good job in shoveling the sidewalks of snow, and there was plenty of free parking.

If you are able to make it to the Bookapalooza it is being held at the Library Headquarters Building, at 1007 E. Mill Plain Blvd, Vancouver WA 98663 (and not at the New Library building on E Evergreen Blvd).  Bring several big, sturdy canvas (or, similar) shopping bags as you can easily get carried away with many book-treasures!

Alexander- Slocum Minot ND is also blessed with a great library that is super up to date. We also have book sales 2 or 3 times a year put on by a group called "friends of the library". I've purchased enough books I better have a very long life after retirement if I'm going to get through them.

Hi Bob Timm, good to know you have a growing personal library!  Vancouver's new Main Library was opened in July of 2011 (Library News here) thus, the Bookapalooza is held at the "Old Library*" which is now the system's HQ location.  John

* Note: for me the true "Old Library" for Vancouver is the Carnegie Library building on Main Street which is now home to the Clark County Historical Society.

BOOKAPALOOZA! - What a creative name for that library event!  Libraries are an important part of any community!  I lived just two blocks from our's, when I was a kid, and spent many summer days there!

Hi Myrl Jeffcoat, your note prompted to me to do a web-search on BookaPalooza, and it seems it is a term used at a fair number of libraries across the continent.  That must have been fun living so close to the library.  Where I grew up we got the Bookmobile every week in the summer time.  Thanks for stopping by!

I hope not one piece of paper is left unsold. And I'm glad I'm learned about this just a little too late to drive over...

Hi Lauren Williams, with the lingering snow I suspect they had a smaller turn-out than expected.  There will be another Bookapalooza later this year!
