Scottsdale Real Estate & Information

With mild nights, sunny shopping days and plenty of western charm, Scottsdale Arizona attracts a steady stream of local and international tourists.  Self-styled “The West’s Most Western Town,” in Scottsdale you can ride horseback through the crisp desert air in the morning and browse one of the nation’s best art museums in the afternoon.  Although Scottsdale is listed among the 100 largest cities in the US, it retains a strong connection to its small-town, Western heritage.  Today, tourism and medical sciences are the two largest industries in Scottsdale.  Scottsdale has been described as both “a desert vision of Miami’s South Beach” and one of the “100 Best Communities for Young People.”

Scottsdale has seen tremendous growth over the decades, starting in the 1960’s when officials worked to build canals to prevent flooding, and to establish a variety of parks and golf courses, something that later became known as the Scottsdale Greenbelt.  By the 1970’s, with manufacturing companies providing jobs, constructions of new homes and master-planned communities was plentiful.  The population of Scottsdale grew from 10,026 in 1960 to 62,873 by 1970, a growth rate of 576 percent.  By 1980, that number had leapfrogged to 88,622. And as of the 2010 U.S. Census, Scottsdale has a population of 217,385.

Scottsdale was originally inhabited by the native Hohokam people, with American settlers arriving in the mid 1800’s. The first company to set up business in the area was an irrigation company that saw prospects making improvements on the ancient irrigation system that was left in place by the Hohokam.  In 1880, George Washington Scott, who with his brothers farmed fruit and vegetables around Phoenix, became the first resident of the town.  In 1894, the name of the town was changed from Orangedale to Scottsdale.

Shopping and Dining
Scottsdale has been dubbed one of the “hippest and happening” places in America by The New York Times. Discerning shoppers love living in a city with an ever-expanding selection of upscale shopping destinations. Scottsdale Fashion Square is not only the most glamorous retail hub in Arizona, it is also the largest; 225 stores located in a spacious two million square-foot complex.

Kierland Commons combines shopping and dining with gorgeous loft apartments.  Every year the city hosts the Scottsdale Fashion Week, an event featuring runway shows from local and global designers like Kate Spade, Betsey Johnson and St. John.  For the mystery and thriller lover one of the best independent crime fiction bookstores in the world — The Poisoned Pen — offers a full range of collectible signed First Editions, American, Canadian and British titles, paperback reading copies and speaking events by world renowned authors.

At night the city heats up, as local music venues and clubs attract a hopping crowd of the young and fashionable. Throughout downtown Scottsdale the number of modern, trendy hotels has increased, with special amenities for both day time and night time crowds. Notably among these are the JW Marriott Scottsdale Camelback Inn Resort & Spa, The Phoenician, The Scott Resort & Spa (formerly the FireSky Resort & Spa, and the funky Hotel Valley Ho.

The dining scene in Scottsdale is as varied as its population, offering something new for Scottsdale residents to try every day of the week.  Like many other cities, Scottsdale has a nice variety of casual restaurant settings: places to bring friends and family for a nice evening together.  But you’ll also find gilded dining halls, intimate lighting, first-class wine lists and outstanding gastronomy minutes from your home in Scottsdale.  Be sure to check out the menu at Cowboy Ciao, an elegant, eclectic dining room serving up modern American cuisine.  Mastro’s Steakhouse in north Scottsdale serves traditional chop house favorites in a magnificent, club-styled dining room. For unmatched Italian cuisine and ambience, visit Uncle Sal's!

Whether fashion, fun or delicious food, you can find everything you need or want in Scottsdale.

Parks and Recreation
With the stunning Sonoran Desert as a backdrop for trail-running or mountain biking and a wide variety of public access parks, pools, and playfields, residents of Scottsdale enjoy a wide selection of fun and fitness activities.

The
McDowell Sonoran Preserve is a 17,000 acre natural preserve, crossed by over 60 miles of multi-use trails which lead adventure seekers through cacti forests and striking geographical landmarks. Because of the immediate accessibility to mountainous areas, rock-climbing and hiking trips are incredibly popular activities in Scottsdale.  Climbers and hikers gather at Camelback Mountain, located in central Scottsdale, to hike the Echo Canyon or Cholla Trail, or climb “The Praying Monk,” a red sandstone formation with permanent anchor bolts about 100 feet high.

There are 200 golf courses in the city of Scottsdale, hosting several big tournaments each year.  The
Waste Management Phoenix Open held at the TPC Scottsdale brings hundreds of thousands of fans each year to Scottsdale for exciting PGA action. From your home in Scottsdale you have access to world-class resorts, tennis courts, equestrian venues and much more, all year long.

Living
Great schools, great community spaces, excellent shopping and dining – just a few reasons CNN/Money Magazine recently named Scottsdale one of America’s “Best Places to Live”.  Scottsdale has more destination spas per capita than any city in the United States and verdant golf courses such as The Phoenician and Silverleaf.  Residents of Scottsdale enjoy a high quality of life in one of the sunniest up-and-coming cities in the world.

Schools, Health, Transportation
The Scottsdale Unified School District serves students K-12 living in the Scottsdale community. Scottsdale students have plenty of choices when it comes to education, making it possible to find the right combination of curriculum and camaraderie without relocating.  There are five high schools in Scottsdale alone: Saguaro High School, Horizon High School, Chaparral High School, Coronado High School and Desert Mountain High School and many others in the surrounding area.  Local colleges and universities include Scottsdale Community College, Arizona State University in Tempe, and the main offices of Penn Foster College.

In health care, a branch of the renowned Mayo Clinic is located in town making Scottsdale a highly sought-after destination nationally for medical care.  With Scottsdale’s extensive public transportation system, you won’t have to worry about parking tickets or gas prices while you’re out and about.

Valley Metro services Scottsdale with several routes in and around the city each day.  Many, however, prefer the two-wheeled approach to getting around the city.

The League of American Bicyclists recently awarded Scottsdale their “Gold Bicycle Friendly Community” ranking, placing Scottsdale ahead of over 400 other bike friendly cities.  Greater than 45 percent of Scottsdale’s main travel-ways have bike lanes.  A person can travel virtually anywhere in Scottsdale by bus or trolley.

Although the routes are limited, residents and tourists alike enjoy an old-fashioned trolley ride through downtown Scottsdale.
