WE'VE BEEN ROBBED!

Yes, it’s true. The title is not “click-bait.” Our home was recently burglarized. We are fortunate that the perpetrators were nabbed by the police, however, that it is NOT the case with most robberies.

Although much of our property was recovered, thanks to my son’s investigative determination (he found much of our belongings on the website OfferUp), the thing that bothered me the most wasn't the “stuff” that was stolen, but the awful feeling of our home being violated.

The holidays are always a preferred time for burglaries. However, there are some easy and important steps you can take to protect yourself and your family from falling victim to criminals.

Lock it up! Let’s address the most obvious security breach. Did you know that nearly half of all break-ins happen without any force? That’s because a window or door was left unlocked. Be sure to regularly check the locks on all entry points to your home.

Motion Sensors are important in keeping your home safe at night. Not only does it surprise a potential burglar, it helps to alert you and your neighbors. Law enforcement also agrees this is the single most effective deterrent to night time robberies.

Don’t leave big boxes on the curb. Your trash could be a thief’s treasure. Advertising your new flat screen TV or laptop computer by placing easily visible boxes on the curb for trash pickup doesn’t help to keep your home secure. This is a big problem during the holidays. Be sure to breakdown any large boxes from recent purchases and hide them from public view.

Clear shrubs and trees near windows and doors. Overgrown vegetation can provide intruders with places to hide and conceal break-ins. Trim it back so any entry point can be clearly seen by neighbors.

Fake them out! Of course, a good security alarm system is one of your best lines of defense. However, if an actual system is not possible, then fake them out by placing a home security sign on your yard. According to police, most thieves stay away from houses with such signs.

Don't be a Griswald! Nothing screams “we’re not home, come on in!” like a stuffed mailbox and a pile of newspapers on the curb. Be sure to have these cleared regularly while your away. When departing on your vacation, be discreet about loading your luggage in the car. It’s hard to be subtle when carrying suitcases and pillows from the house to the car. But, burglars will take notice.

Facebook is a burglar’s best friend. If you share all your vacation photos and stories instantly with the world, you are hanging a “Welcome” sign on your home. Even if a someone is house sitting for you, a burglar will test the waters.

Great Tip! If you have a “panic” alarm on your car’s key fob, be sure to sleep with your keys next to you. Remember, the alarm on your car is a security system. If you hear a disturbing noise at night or if someone is trying to break-in to your home, hit the “panic” button and set off the alarm for a few seconds. No burglar is going to hang around after that.

You can be sure we’ll be making changes to our own home security. It only takes that one dreadful incident like ours to change your mind.  Be safe!
