How to Declutter your home before selling it!

I have always asked myself what is the best way to tell people that they need to declutter their home so that it shows better.

What I have found was that people can be offended sometimes when you tell them that their home needs to be decluttered.

The truth is that almost every home needs to be decluttered on a weekly bais to keep from stuff building up.

I tell them that their home may sell quickly so it is better to be organized for the move when the time comes.

The problem then becomes where to start?

First rule of decluttering is know what you want to take with you you.  Why is important?  If your home goes on the market and you remove something that is screwed or bolted (What is know as a fixture/ is part of the real estate).  It is important that you inform/ Ask your Realtor if it is okay to remove if it is prior to the sale.  Sometimes the damage is not worth the value.

Here is the process that I have found that works:

1. Start with the garage if you have one.  This is because as you declutter more your going to put it in the garage and do something with it.

If you don't have a garage, then find a place in your home that is easy for you to take it from the house to the car.

2. Make 4 signs in that garage or room.  Trash, Donate, Sell or keep.  Most likely the keep pile while have items that will move to the others piles as you think more about how much you really need it.

3. If you have a basement start there, otherwise pick the room with most amount of stuff.

4. Move stuff from that room to the piles and then out of the house.

We will go through who you decide to get rid of stuff in the next post.
