Agave plants growing well in upcountry Maui Hawaii

Did you know agave plants grow on Maui?

I was quite surprised to see this field planted with agave while viewing a large estate for sale in upcountry Maui Hawaii.  Why not grow agave plants?  They seem to be doing well and probably don't need a lot of water and maintenance.  Maybe this crop could be planted in the central valley where the sugar cane used to grow.... organic Maui tequila could be huge!

Boutique farming is a way to make agriculture pay off on this small island.  The land is expensive here, so the rewards need to be high too. With creative marketing and some value added products in a cute gift shop, an entrepreneur can bring in some income without having to produce huge crops.  Buyers want something to take home as a souvenir.  The sky is the limit when it comes to AG enterprises.

Georgie,

I had no idea, and that is definitely a great idea to have organic tequila from Hawaii.  Thank you for sharing this. A

Interesting Georgie.  For two reasons.  One the topic of your post and then the mention of where the sugar cane 'used to grow'.  Have land prices out run the sugar cane?  Mark

Georgie Hunter R(S) 58089 This could really be a big development for the Islands if tequila production becomes a new industry there. Exciting!

Funny you should have posted this. IU was at the Women's March in L.A. which was packed. You could not move. And there were agave plants in the middle of it all that threatened to impale us. I felt bad for them caught amongst the crowd.

Mark Don McInnes, Sandpoint The last crop of sugar cane has been run through the mill and the mill has closed down!  It was the last of the mills in Hawaii to shut down.  Sugar production is not profitable anymore and the times are changing here on Maui.  It's quite a big thing and we are all wondering what comes next...

Georgie Hunter R(S) 58089 - I enjoyed reading your post and seeing the photos but my favorite link of all was

I signed up for their newsletter. The recipes sound delicious! Several years ago I went to Lavendar Farms in Texas and fell in love with the scent of lavender. They prepared a luncheon which I attended and everything was made with lavendar. I could live with that!
