Who, What, Where, When and Why are You Writing?

By
Real Estate Agent with Cedaredge Land Company

As an active real estate blogger, I read a lot of other real estate blog posts. For the most part I like what I read, but I have to wonder who the author is targeting. Who is the audience? Is it the ActiveRain membership to get featured, or are you really blogging for business? It's fun to write to the membership for points and attention, but I'm here to make connections and attract business.

Debbie Laity the best real estate agent in Delta county coloradoI have a real estate blog so I can share my area and market expertise. My audience is the person that wants to buy or sell a home. It's also the buyer/seller or person, looking to relocate, that wants more information. I'm working to make myself the local area expert in real estate.

Sometimes I do write for those in my profession, and that's why I'm writing this post. I'm known for my boring market reports, but those work for me. They bring buyers to me. Although they don't bring me a lot of comments from other members.

I have written articles those associated with the real estate profession, might consider boring. I don't care. My objective is to educate the consumer.

Here's a post that spells out the meaning of common real estate abbreviations.

This post is a great example of speaking out to the consumer.

If you don't work in real estate do you really know what DOM or EM means? The above blog post might seem like trite information to real estate professionals, and those associated with the industry, but to the consumer this is great information.

When writing on your blog keep your audience in mind. Who are you trying to attract? Don't let your ego get in the way. Keep it simple, and keep it short. That way you won't lose your audience. Don't use big words to try to make yourself look smart. That might scare away potential clients. Explain in everyday terms what you are trying to communicate.

I know when I'm looking for information outside of my area of expertise, I want someone that is educated, but yet someone I can talk with.

When writing a consumer directed blog post, write like you would speak to a buyer or seller that comes into your office. Be conversational. Be friendly and informative. You also need to keep in mind that what you say now will have an impact for years to come. That's the power of the internet.

It's that simple. Have fun and keep on blogging.

I've lived on Colorado's Western Slope for over 26 years. I love this area and all it has to offer, and I enjoy sharing what I know about my home. As a REALTOR®, I also love to share my expertise in this area as well. If you need any real estate information for Montrose County, or Delta County, Colorado...please give me a call.

I agree with you, Praful Thakkar ...In my office we use the fifth grade approach, but the idea is all the same.

I completely agree, Marte Cliff ...I like to write and relate to my audience...not sound superior.

Hi, Debbie Reynolds ...It was just yesterday I had a conversation with another AR member about writing market reports, and how it's more like homework and something that is often dreaded. But they do make the phone ring. Thanks for stopping by.

Hi, Sondra Meyer: ...get those market reports done. They are what makes the phone ring. I know they stink to do, but they are what people want to see.

Hi, Sheri Sperry - MCNE® ...sometimes you need a lot of words to get the message across and if it's engaging content, the reader will stay with it. I enjoy your posts. I recently read the one about the eaglets and the train. I loved it.

Hi Debbie,

I'm working on the market reports. I've probably got 10 posts drafted waiting on a few finishing touches and pictures. Thank you for the motivation!
