Breckenridge becomes the center of the ice sculpting world in the coming weeks

A much anticipated and greatly celebrated event takes place in the town of Breckenridge starting this Tuesday, January 24.

Surrounded by the spectacular Rocky Mountains, the Budweiser International Snow Sculpture Championships in Breckenridge is a world class event with 26 years of history. Watch as talented ice artists from around the world skillfully combine grueling physicality with precision artistry in an ice carving competition that has become a true Breckenridge tradition.

The Championship sculpting gets underway on January 24-28 for Sculpting Week, and from January 28 - February 5th 2017 for Viewing Week. The competition gets heated as groups of artists work long, exhausting hours to turn 20 tons of snow into lifelike ice sculptures. Food and sleep are foregone in a race against the clock as each team has only 65 hours to complete their icy masterpiece. After four long days of labor, the artists will set down their carving tools as the sculpting part of the competition comes to an end. At this point visitors are welcome to stop by and admire the beautiful artworks, and vote on their favorite sculpture for the People's Choice winner – a hard task to accomplish. The Riverwalk Center is also home to the Ice Village, where each ice carving is sculpted into a glowing statue to represent many of the supporters of the Snow Sculpture Championships. The sculptures will be exhibited in the Tiger Dredge parking lot adjacent to the Riverwalk Center.

The snow sculptures are located in the area around the Riverwalk Center at 150 West Adams Avenue in Breckenridge.  Event headquarters are in the Riverwalk Center and nearby communities include the Park Place CondosSundowner CondosPine Ridge CondominiumsWinterpoint Townhomes, and Four O'Clock Condos. All these properties have a great proximity to the Four O’Clock Run, located on Peak 8, Breckenridge’s longest trail.

Parking and transportation

Free parking and free public transportation is available throughout the town. Be sure to stop by the Thaw Lounge+Music for postcards, pins and for more event information including a look at past sculptures.
