If you are selling a home the more storage space the better, no doubt about it.
When you are “living” in a home that same storage space can be a two edged sword.
First let me add a caveat to my first statement: being able to show others that your home has a lot of storage space is a good thing… as long as the space(s) you show them is not packed full. Thus the two edged sword.
So what if all your storage space is full? Do you add more space such as organized shelving, a yard shed, or an addition to your home/garage? NO, you need to get rid of some stuff AND you need to work on getting your collecting/hording habit under control.
If you have storage space that is packed full you may want to consider thinning it out using my real life experience.
In 2011 our home was enveloped in a flood that destroyed all contents of our home, garage, and yard shed. We had a limited amount of time to remove what was important to us and knew that in all likely hood the rest would be destroyed, which it was. We lost about 80% of our possessions and today I can attest that there is very little we lost that I miss (80% mind you).
Last of all, what to do with that stuff?
1) Have a rummage/garage sale and what doesn’t sell give or throw away.
2) Give it to a good charity such as a YWCA women’s shelter.
3) Ask your pastor if he/she knows of a family in need at your church.
4) give it to a thrift store like Salvation Army or Goodwill.
Parting thought: Filled storage space is no longer “space”, it’s clutter.
