Is it true that you can not have enough storage space?

Shoes a plentyIf you are selling a home the more storage space the better, no doubt about it.

When you are “living” in a home that same storage space can be a two edged sword.

First let me add a caveat to my first statement: being able to show others that your home has a lot of storage space is a good thing… as long as the space(s) you show them is not packed full. Thus the two edged sword.

So what if all your storage space is full? Do you add more space such as organized shelving, a yard shed, or an addition to your home/garage? NO, you need to get rid of some stuff AND you need to work on getting your collecting/hording habit under control.

Office Back room If you have storage space that is packed full you may want to consider thinning it out using my real life experience.

In 2011 our home was enveloped in a flood that destroyed all contents of our home, garage, and yard shed. We had a limited amount of time to remove what was important to us and knew that in all likely hood the rest would be destroyed, which it was. We lost about 80% of our possessions and today I can attest that there is very little we lost that I miss (80% mind you).

Last of all, what to do with that stuff?

1) Have a rummage/garage sale and what doesn’t sell give or throw away.

2) Give it to a good charity such as a YWCA women’s shelter.

3) Ask your pastor if he/she knows of a family in need at your church.

4) give it to a thrift store like Salvation Army or Goodwill.

Parting thought: Filled storage space is no longer “space”, it’s clutter.

Nice article Bob, it wasn't apparent from the title where you were going with this! We moved from California in 2011, we emptied out our storage unit that we had for five years and realized it was all junk/stuff we didn't need. So we got rid of it. Our moving truck was now too large and I wondered why on earth didn't I do this five years ago and save the five years of storage fees!!? There's still too much stuff in our home but we're working on it....

Letting "stuff" go is really hard for many of us. I will pick up things because they were free, because I might use it someday, I could maybe make a buck off of it on eBay or a rummage sale, or the price was right so I bought two. I am a horder but I'm really trying to re-hab myself Peter Tamura .

Hi Bob - thanks for sharing your story.  I believe that the same hold true for all of us.  We have lived in the home that we built for 28 years and I have decided to clean out room by room closet by closet.

Grant Schneider it's only been 6 years since the flood and I could get rid of 10 years of junk... which I plan on doing this spring after my rummage sale.

Raymond E. Camp I've been holding on to some suits that I "hope" to fit in again some day. Time for them to go cause it will never happen on my end.

Lots of storage means lots of stuff!  Buyers love a lot of storage space.  I don't want to fill it! -Kasey

I have seen people have sales after they move.  They should have had one months before the  home was listed.

Good morning Bob.  Thankfully it's finally hitting home to my wife.  She likes stuff and buys anything that strikes her fancy at the moment, just to be put away never to be seen again.

Yikes, even I am not that bad James Dray , I may have to travel to AR if you have a rummage sale.

I do believe that the more storage space you have the more STUFF you end up keeping.
