Wordless Wednesday...How Do They Do That?

Larry and I took a spin out to Green Cay Wetlands the other day to catch up with some of the wildlife out there. I noticed one of the high-rise homes in the palm trees.

I’ve seen woodpeckers in them but other inhabitants have been known to take residence there. In fact, once we came upon a terrible scene.  The current tenant was being evicted by one much larger.  The screeching that went on was unnerving.  We wondered if there were some babies in there that were at risk.

One thing I’ve always wondered, though...how in the world do those woodpeckers peck such perfectly round holes?

Do you know?

I think they just follow the "dots." Kathy Streib I find it interesting that you would even think about this.

Your Florida woodpeckers must be neater and more precise than our Oklahoma ones.

Oh boy.  Those beaks must be made of stainless steel.  I'm not sure I could make such a round hole with a saw!!!!

Kathy I have no idea of how they do that but I've got a bird book to look it up in!  We've got a woodpecker that stays in a huge cactus in front of our house from time to time. I'll have to go look at the holes!

Hi Kathy - Not my favorite bird - we're constantly shooing them away from our apparently tasty house. They don't live in the holes they make here, but other birds will frequently nest in them.

They are very good at it.  I have wooden light stands along my driveway and at each end they have made homes.  I am reluctant to replace them

Did you know some species (Pileated Woodpeckers) actually peck rectangular holes while others make no holes at all, they create circular rows?

They bore holes the size of their body and they do have drill like beaks but I couldn't find how or why they are so symmetrical?
