“Millions of Peaches. Peaches for Me!”
Some of you will get that 1990s reference, and now you’re gonna sing that for the remainder of your day….for the rest of you, who don’t have a clue, I’m sorry you’re not cool like us!
Anyway…..Why am I singing this song today? Well, in a previous blog, we talked about the town of Ruston, Louisiana. In it, we briefly mentioned the Peach Festival. Today, we’re going to dive deeper into that Festival and see what it’s all about.
The Peach Festival was begun in the 1950s by area peach farmers. The first festival was small, but was a smashing success. People came from the surrounding areas not only to participate in the events held during the festival, but also to benefit from the sales held by local businesses. After the initial event, the festival grew not only in size, but also in fame. In later years, the Festival was sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce and most recently, by corporate sponsors.
The festival is always held the 4th weekend of June and includes all sorts of events that appeal to the masses. Leading up the Festival, there is community contest called the Peach Hunt. Clues are given daily, until someone finds the prize! On this week, the residents of Ruston can be seen roaming the town day and night on a treasure hunt! There are other family-friendly events such as a Diaper Derby, Baby Photo Contest, Cooking Contest, Art Exhibit, several Pageants, and an antique car show. The Peach Festival Parade and Art and Crafts Show are always huge hits. I’m sure there are a plethora of other events that I’ve missed! There is no lack of food, so be sure to come hungry! You can even join in on the Peach Eating Contest or the Peach Cobbler Eating Contest!
Now doesn’t that sound like more fun than a barrel of monkeys?? One other thing that really goes without saying is that it’s usually hot as blazes, being that its June, so sunscreen up folks! Ruston, Louisiana is looking for you!
Movin’ to the Country….gonna eat me a lot of Peaches. Movin’ to the Country…gonna eat me a lot of Peaches…….If I had my little way, I’d eat peaches every day….
