I’ve Been Working on My Moves
Lest you think I am joining the dating scene again, let me clarify. Been there done that years ago! I don’t need to, thankfully. But I am always working on my moves…real estate moves, that is.
As a Carlsbad Realtor with a bunch of personal relocations under my belt I focus, in part, on that niche.
Many of the buyers I work with have moved here from other parts of the country or other areas of California. The more I learn as I work with relocating buyers, and sellers, the better prepared I am to help those who need it in the future. And I learn something from every move, whether a client’s or my own…stuff I share in my relocation tips and advice video series.
Introduction to my Relocation Tips Video Series
In the last 3 years, in addition to my own move from one house to another in Carlsbad, I have helped several family members with their moves, and not just around the corner. Each move has helped me better understand the needs, concerns and challenges homeowners who are moving face, and this provides fodder for my Relocation Checklist (now 5 pages long), my Questions to Ask Your Movers Checklist, and my Moving with Pets Checklist.
I also gained insights I share with clients who are planning a move to help make it easier for them, and help them not forget things they need to do.
I helped my Mom sell her house in PA and then move across country to Carlsbad in 2013 and into an apartment. I then helped her with a purchase and move to her new condo the following year here in Carlsbad.
I found out a lot more about movers and important questions to ask them so you can plan accordingly in both instances.
I also learned that it’s important to not make assumptions about what homeowners know and what they are working on to facilitate their move but to ask them to be sure – often they don’t know or are not thinking ahead as they should to coordinate not only the purchase but also the move. Planning is key, and being aware of move dates is essential.
We also moved into our own new house in Carlsbad in 2014, our 10th, not far from our prior home; experiencing our own moves always helps us better understand the emotions, and the challenges, our clients go through when buying and selling, and to find new ways to help them with advice and checklists.
I have been through a simultaneous purchase and sale several times as a homeowner over the years, and those moves served me when advising 2 different clients who did just that again in 2016.
I helped my daughter and her husband pack up and move from their apartment in Oakland to new digs in LA in November 2015. Given the limited time we had to pack everything before movers arrived, it was another good lesson about being efficient with your time and not waiting until the last moment to get started as you never have quite as much time as you think you, and stuff always intervenes. It was also another reminder, as with my own moves, that you always have more stuff than you think you do and getting rid of items you no longer want should be done as early in the process as possible. Why pack and move it if you don’t need or use it? Easy to say, but not always so easy to do.
I also just finished helping them move across the street to their first home, a condo.
Even when the move is only a few hundred yards, you have many of the same issues to deal with around the purchase transaction, but also coordinating getting all your stuff from one place to another, dealing with utilities, and getting any work done before moving in, all while working and dealing with daily life issues, and the list goes on.
Given my focus on real estate moves, especially long distance ones, I created a playlist of 19 short videos with lots of different relocation tips and advice on my YouTube Channel to share with buyers and sellers.
I also have a Relocation blog that will answer many questions about making a big move, and a series of articles here on ActiveRain that address key relocation issues such as:
