Weltenschauung Principle #1

If you've been hanging around ActiveRain this past month, chances are you've seen this crazy 'W' word floating around.  Usually once a year, we're invited to review, reflect, and write about the Weltenschauung of ActiveRain, or the guiding principles that make the AR community such a unique and beneficial place to us all.

For me, the heart and soul of ActiveRain lies within the community, and the foundation of that community is our business.  For that reason, it's principle JM Loans ActiveRain#1 that resonates most strongly with me.

1. We understand that the value of the ActiveRain community rests entirely with its members.  We admire the spirit of real estate professionals and believe our goal is to fully engage their talents and knowledge for the benefit of all members of the real estate community.

I love this principle because it talks right off the bat about the value of the community.  It also places a responsibility for that value on the membership.  It's not just an option, but a responsibility of being in the rain to help provide value.  When we all work to do that as individuals, it creates a synergy for the entire site and community.

Fact is, when you write something that adds value to ActiveRain, it adds value to me as a member.  It makes everything I write with that 'activerain.com' url rank better in the search engines, and makes my phone ring.  With every piece I write that adds value, it does the same for you.  Together, we create value, resources, and help to make each others phones ring and businesses grow.

Though some may disagree, I think this principle also speaks to the danger of posting too much irrelevant material, point-grabbing, and robo-posting.  All of the above don't apporach that goal of "engaging talents & knowledge" to benefit the community.  Whereas posting to add value, education, & consumer or industry knowledge helps us all, plagiarism, robo-posting, or writing full of mistakes, misinformation, or things completely irrelevant to real estate, our businesses, or ourselves harms the community.

Principle #1 speaks to something all of us should remember - that this site is a big piece of the real estate community, and everything we write here is either adding to, or taking away from that same community.

A lot of people wonder "how do I get started with blogging" or "what should I write about" - keeping principle #1 in mind is a great place to start.  If your writing is engaging your talents & knowledge to benefit the ActiveRain community, the rest will fall into place all on it's own.

John- well put.  The essence of ActiveRain, to me, has always been the community.  The members are a powerful force that can do much.  But, it is up to each one of us to make it the platform and community that we want it to be.

Yeah ... Back when I was posting daily... some would comment with crazy things which indicated they had not read the post at all... or "Great post have a nice day".  I know I have posted the same quote but when 75 other people have already said everything that could be possible be said what more is there to actually say?  However, in  my case I only had 3 or 4 comments....so I knew,

Great post, John.  I have learned so much from this group.  I have laughed, cried and sometimes cringed at some of the subject matter, but it is always thought provoking.  I enjoy the different perspectives and while I love the blogs, reading the comments always gives me a chance to look at another perspective.

Hi John

Congratulations on the feature. You've articulated so well the value of not only being here individually but the value we can bring to each other but our sharing, helping and critiquing. Fortunately most who are here are contributing in valuable ways and are seeing value in what they are doing here with regard to their blogging and attracting business. Those who are not have only themselves to blame.

Glad we all have an individual voice here in the Rain John and that is to be respected. That is what sets this forum apart from others who, quite honestly, fall short! Though I may post a message almost every day, it means something to me and if someone else thinks so, a comment appears. If not, then I missed my mark! Congrats on the feature, well deserved.

What a great piece!  I actually wrote a mini-rant about robo-posting myself a couple of years ago.  I can't stand it when I see six or seven posts written in a row by a member touting nearly the same verbage in each one.

Your points in this piece are well-taken, and congratulations on a well-deserved feature!

Dear John,

If it does not add to the conversation, it is a waste of time. Robo-posting!! Really?? Who thinks that clients are dumb enough to find that interesting. There may be some, but I have never run across any dumb clients so far.

Hi John!  You are so right!  Everyone contributes to the success of others here in the Rain with the articles that they publish and the comments to support one another.  Those 'point-grabbers' are a detriment to our community - those who post 'all about themselves' posts, robo-posts and don't really visit the Q&A section to offer any answers aren't really contributing members of our community in my humble opinion.

Great post and congrats on the feature, John!

There are many reasons ActiveRain is such an active platform ... each of us is here for a variety of reasons.  I especially liked your Principle #1.

Thanks for your blog ... I really enjoyed reading it and can see why it was FEATURED! Congratulations.
