Holly Springs Document Shredding

"Shred-A-Thon" May 24, 2008

One of the more dreaded aspects of Spring Cleaning or preparing to move can be going through old paperwork, sorting what should stay and what should go.

Bankrate.com has a great guide on what to keep, and for how long.

A couple basics:

Paycheck Stubs:  Keep payroll stubs until your W-2 arrives.  Once you check to make sure everything matches, shred the paycheck stubs.

Bills:  Keep all bills until the payment clears.  After the check clears, keep any bills for large purchases like jewerly, rugs, appliances, furniture, and computers, to provide proof of value in case of any loss or damage.

Tax Returns: Hold onto these and the back up documentation for seven years.

Check out the link for more details on which paperwork can stay and which can be obliterated into small shreds of paper at your neighborhood "Shred-a-Thon"!

Then come to Holly Springs for the document shredding opportunity:

Saturday May 24 from 9 am to noon

at the Holly Springs Town Hall, during the Farmer's Market

This service is offered by the Holly Springs Police Department

One more thing you'll want to bring:  those credit card "preapproved" offers that come in the mail every month!

Concerned about Identity Theft?

You also may want to check out the Fraud Awareness Class, also offered by the Holly Springs Police Department.

Wednesday May 28 from 7-8:30 pm at the Holly Springs Town Hall.

Good post Penny. It would be nice to have something like that here. I have to get rid of some old files. I am starting to keep a lot of my files electronic.

Hi Penny,

What an excellent service for the police to provide to the public. I wish they provided that service here in my area....I end up feeding bunches of paper bit by bit into the shredder at the office and it's slow going when I have a ton of paper to recycle that needs shredding first (like right now since I'm cleaning out my filing cabinets).

Michael - Electronic is the way to go.  I do forget to back up sometimes, which is probably the only drawback to that route!

Kristin - It's not something that really gets the word out.  Check your local town halls and chamber of commerce, they may actually put these events on.

Jo- I agree.  I have a 5-page shredder at home, and it can't even handle most of the credit apps that come in the mail.
