"Studying history helps us learn from those who came before us, and understand those who are now among us. As we make history, we must be mindful of those who will come after us."
-Carol Williams
On this day (January 30) in 1847 the city of Yerba Buena was renamed San Francisco, as a result of the Mexican-American War.
Yerba Buena was originally a Mexican settlement intended as a trading post for ships visiting the bay. In typical Spanish style, it was arranged with a central plaza. This plaza today is known as Portsmouth Square, named after the war ship USS Portsmouth. The first public school in California was erected, on the southwest corner of the plaza, in the same year the city became known as San Francisco.
I find it ironic that Portsmouth Square, the spot of the original Mexican settlement, is in a small portion of what is now known as Chinatown.
Good morning Carol. I love trivia as I know Wayne Martin does. It shows in his trivia posts. This is just icing on the cake. I do hope there is more to follow.

I did not know that but it does make sense, Cheryl Dukes - Atlanta . Thanks for stopping by.
We have been to San Francisco and probably trod our toes on that settlement. When the US won that war their Western expansion added a large chunk of land.
