Virginia Homeowner Associations

Starting July 1, 2008 House Bill HB516 goes into effect. With this law companies or even your neighbor who is the volunteer who runs your Assoc must now become certified. . This will mean they must take classes and be licensed. With the constantly changing boards of local condos and subdivisions does this mean that management companies will have to take over? Is this good?    Time will tell

Barry, I think it is a good idea for Associations to become certified. Management companies might make Associations more business like instead of on a personal level. Do you think mandatory certification will increase Association dues and affect the cost for Association docs?

Good Post!

Michael   I think cost will go up. With that said in many cases prof mgt may save the homeowner money in the long run. Better records and just better maintenance may lead to fewer large special assessments and legal problems. Just a thought.

Barry, It sounds like a logistics nightmare to me.  We don't have zoning in the Houston area so have lots and lots of HOA's as that is the only way to maintain our property values.  I can't imagine what it would be like if the state tried to do something like that here.  So does this mean if you get elected to the board of your HOA that you have to take classes?  It is a volunteer position; that just seems like it is asking quite a lot from a volunteer.  Who is going to keep track of whether the volunteer has had their training?
