Our local airport wants public input into their Reno-Tahoe International Airport Master Plan. The next public meeting will be held March 16, 2017.

Our Reno community experienced significant growth in the last couple of years.  Tesla, Apple, Zulily, Amazon, SUPERNAP and Jet.com represent only a few of the big name corporations calling the Reno/Sparks area their home.  With these new businesses come more visitors into our City.  The Reno-Tahoe International Airport Master Plan hopes to accommodate these people by making significant changes to the current airport.  Right now, ideas continue to be bandied about.  The planning committee would love to have public input throughout the process.

Search Reno homes for saleSerious discussion of the Reno-Tahoe International Airport Master Plan began in October 2016.  The very first public meeting in November 2016 proved quite fruitful.  They want to include the public's ideas throughout the entire 16 month process.  Their next public meeting is scheduled for March 16th.  The time and location have yet to be determined.  However, you can keep up-to-date by visiting the Reno-Tahoe International Airport's Master Plan Meeting web page here.  You will find information regarding what was discussed in last November's public meeting there as well.

The Reno-Tahoe International Airport recently announced a new nonstop route to San Jose.  Currently, Alaska Airline provides the only nonstop to San Jose,  However, beginning in June, Southwest adds nonstop service to this destination as well.  Other nonstops RTIA offers right now include Dallas (only available through March 4th), Atlanta, Los Angeles, Long Beach, Oakland and New York.  More nonstop flights currently in discussion include Boston, Washington DC, Calgary, Vancouver, Tijuana and Mexico City.  As you can imagine, expansion like this requires some updating and modernization to keep up with the demand placed on the RTIA.

What Does the Reno-Tahoe International Airport Master Plan Cover?

The master plan focuses on three different areas of improvement: airfields, terminal and ground transportation.  The Reno-Tahoe International Airport Master Plan includes improvements to the runways, taxiways, airspace and aprons of the airfields.  Next, the ticketing areas, baggage claim, terminal gates, customs and concession stands will be modernized.  Finally, the committee wants to improve ground transportation, such as use of airport land, roads in and around the airport and parking areas.

Check back with the RTIA website often to find out future public meeting times.  No local taxes will be used for these improvements.  Funding comes mainly from the FAA's Airport Improvement Program grants and supplemented by the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority.
