Where is Tredyffrin Easttown?

Located about 20 miles north west from the center of Philadelphia lies two townships in Chester County. Tredyffrin and Easttown Townships. These two townships have one combined school district referred to as Tredyffrin Easttown or T/E.

Tredyffrin Township

Tredyfrrin Township was originally settled in the late 17th century. In the 2010 census it held a population of 29,332. It is 19.9square miles and is part of Chester County. A small part of Valley Forge National Historical Park sits in the township which has many historical links to the Revolutionary period. It has a very active historical society that works hard to protect old buildings and sites within the area. Towns and villages or parts of them lying in the township include Paoli, Berwyn, Devon, Malvern, Strafford and Wayne. The township is overseen by a seven member board of  Supervisors which traditionally has been Republican.

As the name implies Tredyffrin was part of the land set aside by William Penn for the Welsh to settle in the latter part of the 17th century. The township was incorporated in 1707. Tre means town and dyffrin means wide cultivated valley and the township sits on the hillsides of the valley looking towards Valley Forge. As the township grew, with mills and farms, many churches were also built that still stand today throughout the township.

The 19th century saw the development of the township as the Main Line railway line was developed out to Paoli.

The township holds 2 libraries, one in Paoli and one on Upper Gulph Road.

The township makes up part of the Tredyffrin Easttown School District ranked on Niche as the #1 in the nation. Housing is varied with single family homes and townhouses, supplemented by condos and apartments to own and rent. There have been many planned communities in the township Chesterbrook probably being the most well known.

Easttown Township

Like Tredyffrin, Easttown Township is part of Chester County and was created in 1704. It is 8.2 square miles and is the other part of the Tredyffrin Easttown School District. The main areas of the township are in Paoli, Berwyn and Devon.

Originally settled by Welsh Quakers the township drew people of all nationalities, including Swiss, Dutch, French and Swedish families as well as English and Scots. It was mainly a farming community and its products were sent to Philadelphia. 

The area saw several actions during the American Revolution. But it was the railway that helped the area to grown and prosper. Berwyn and many other stations were given Welsh names to help promote the area as location for summer homes for Philadelphians to beat the summer heat. Devon was the site of the Devon Hotel and Polo grounds. But it was in the 1950's that the area was most changed with population increasing dramatically as farms were converted repeated again in the 1970's.

Housing is mainly single family homes or townhouses with little rental accommodation available although this may be changing with new development today.

Both townships have high demand for housing from buyers today. Whilst there has been little new construction for a long time, today we are seeing builders buying lots to supply the townships with modern townhomes and infilling where they are allowed. Many homes undergo renovation or extension and prices have remained strong throughout the townships.
