It's Time to Request Your FREE Credit Report

Credit advice is everywhere ...

The internet, social media, news outlets, financial and lending institutions, and more provide a never-ending supply of it.

So by now, you've probably seen and heard that your Credit Score is important ... and that you should check your Credit Report on a consistent and timely basis.

But where do you start?

There are 2 simple ways to achieve this important task:

1:  You can talk to your Lender.

This is most commonly done when applying for a mortgage (or loan of some kind), but it can be accomplished at any time.  (It must be pointed out that should you not be applying for a loan anytime soon, there may be a small charge for running a Credit Report in this manner.  This charge will be incurred at the discretion of your Lender.)

Or ...

2:  You can order your Credit Report via one of the 3 consumer credit bureaus ...  Experian,  TransUnion, Equifax).

It's a fact:  Each credit bureau is required to provide you aFREE copy of your Credit Report once every 12 months.  (By staggering your requests throughout the year, you best monitor changes or errors that might occur.)

This is easy to do.  Just go to:

You'll be asked to provide the following info:

  • Your Name
  • Your Address
  • Your Date of Birth
  • Your Social Security Number

Please Note:  You may also be required to provide a previous address if you have moved during the past two (2) years.

Security is in place on this site, so it may be necessary for you to establish a "secret" question or answer that no one else knows in order to complete your Credit Report request.

By doing all the above, you should easily and quickly accomplish your mission.  See?  Not so bad ...

And Remember:  Should you have questions regarding your Credit Report request, about your credit, or financing options to buy in Chicagoland, Illinois, or Wisconsin ... please reach out to me.  I'll be glad to hear from you, answer your questions, or assist in any way I can.

* Hoping to Buy or Refinance a Home in New Lenox, Will County, or elsewhere in the Chicagoland area? Contact me! I'll put my 40+ years of Mortgage experience and expertise hard to work on your behalf.

Hi Gene

Great information for consumers to keep tabs on their credit scores. Seems to me I've heard that other sites that purport to provide you with your credit score are not giving you accurate information.

Depending on the method you choose to gain your Scores or Report ... yes, the results can differ, Jeff Dowler.  The Credit Card companies are notorious for offering Scores higher than the scores used by Mortgage Lenders, just as an example.  But the Report itself, gained from this source, should provide you a reliable accounting of your history.

Good reminder Gene. It's always a good idea to check your free credit report at least once a year to make sure there aren't any errors. The last thing you want to do is find out there are problems just before purchasing a home.

Definitely, Myrl Jeffcoat ...  I recommend those hoping to buy should be especially vigilant regarding their Credit .. and do so, at minimum, 1 full year out from buying ...

Gene,  I have the free credit report service through one of my credit card companies.  I find it interesting that the scores are much lower there than when I full credit report is pulled for a refinance or auto purchase.

Feb 08, 2017 08:49 AM
Gene Mundt, IL/WI Mortgage Originator - FHA/VA/Conv/Jumbo/Portfolio/Refi

Lower?  I typically see higher, Kathleen Daniels .. but you prove that they are not as reliable as other resources provide.  And that is an important point ...

Yes to this posting and the hosting too. How about going over that report with someone that can tell you what it can do in the Real Estate market place as well?

EXCELLENT advice, Richie Alan Naggar ... in today's mortgages and approvals, "positioning" yourself is important.  An LO can help you do that.  Best done well in advance of buying too ...

Thank you for adding that very important point ...

I had recently done this for myself and was surprised that it showed everything but an actual credit score.  That could be added for a "nominal fee".

I have had a lot of clients using Credit Kharma but that also doesn't equate to a tri-merge score.

My quick test is:  Tell me about your credit card applications you see in the mail.  (do they get any, are they from companies that target low credit score clients, or it is for an American Express or some Platinum Card?)

Feb 08, 2017 11:21 AM
Gene Mundt, IL/WI Mortgage Originator - FHA/VA/Conv/Jumbo/Portfolio/Refi

True, those mailings can be indicative Jim Paulson ... but for those hoping to buy, the best step is to talk with a Lender.  Get your scores ... then you know reality.  And the earlier in the process that you do it, the better ...

Gene, this is an excellent reminder. I talk with so many buyers who have no idea what their score is. It's worse when they use a free service provided by their credit card and then are taken back when a lender shares their scores from a full report, always seem to be lower from the full report.

Feb 08, 2017 11:42 AM
Gene Mundt, IL/WI Mortgage Originator - FHA/VA/Conv/Jumbo/Portfolio/Refi

The differences can lead to overconfidence ... or paralysis .. depending on what a consumer is receiving, Amanda S. Davidson.  Not sure which is worse.  The scenario you speak of ... or someone thinking they can't buy when in reality they may have options to do so ...

Speaks to why a conversation with a Lender is so very important ...  thank you for making your point!
