Ebenezer was born in Northampton, Massachusetts back in 1743 to Samuel and Hannah. He moved and founded Poultney, Vermont in 1771. He became a Lieutenant in a company of the Green Mountain Boys fighting with Ethan Allen at Ft. Ticonderoga. Moving up the ranks to captain in 1777 he distinguished himself at the Battle of Bennington. In the same year, he captured Mt. Defiance.
After the war, he occupied many positions of civil authority. He served as Justice of the Peace, serving on many town committees and was elected as a representative to the Vermont General Assembly from 1788-1792. He also heled frame the Vermont constitution.
He moved again to Burlington, Vermont in 1800 where he operated a tavern there until his death in 1806. He died while visiting this cousin Ethan Allen at his home in South Hero. What you may not know about him is that he was a man of strong convictions be it political, moral or religious. A strong believer he was opposed to slavery stating “I being conscientious that it is not right in the sight of God to keep laves, give them their freedom.”
