What's Not to Love?

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Southwest 391804

This is my first attempt to enter a contest, but I felt compelled to add my 2 cents to Bill Spear's challenge for February.  Why do I love what I do?  People.  That's all.  Just people.  I spent what seemed like 20 years at an accounting job that only actually lasted 6 months.  Early in my working life, I thought I wanted to make the little numbers add up, but now realize that if hell does exist, there will be spreadsheets.

I love people.  I love their stories.  This career has led me to be able to meet folks from every walk of life.  From the boat captain from Bangaladesh who captained the ship which took lions to the Baghdad zoo (one got loose on the boat), to the ex-pro football player who was terrified of dogs, my clients have come from diverse backgrounds, religions, creeds and colors, but they all wanted one thing, a safe place to raise their families. I've walked with folks who had experienced the end of a dream due to death or divorce and I have celebrated with recently married couples and those who had new babies.  I've watched families grow and change.  The little girl who hid her chicken nuggets in the console of my car so she could get her cookie is now out of college and buying her first home.  The young family who had one toddler are now parents of three beautiful kids.  The ugly also reared it's head as siblings argued over proceeds from their mom's beloved home and the couple who had split and used every opportunity (even in front of me and their kids) to belittle one another.  An agent friend of mine says "you really see people's hearts in this business".  Truer words were never spoken.

My first broker told me "this business gets in your blood".  As a new agent, I seriously doubted that something that required this much work could do that.  However, Mr. Schroeder was correct.  Real estate is in my blood.  I could retire. I could ride off into the sunset and never sell another home, but that is not my plan.  I seriously love what I do.  When this stops being fun, I will consider what the next chapter has in store.  I hope that is no time soon.

Jeanne Gregory Great post and entry from you and regarding 'People', each one we meet we always try to begin with a clean slate, since they are like that proverbial 'Box of Chocolates'!

Thanks.  That is the way I feel, but being married to an engineer, my whole life is in a spreadsheet that I didn't have to make!

Love your post. Yes, we do see every side of people in this business. I guess that is why people often think we are social workers as well.

Jeanne, great post, and sorry I missed it when you wrote it.   This business does have so many twists and turns and emotions, but that is why we continue to do so every day.  Great entry.

Jeanne I am here as a result of Patricia Feager blog today.  Our hearts and prayers go out to all who are impacted by this storm, but even a little more so for our fellow AR Members.  I hope the levees hold and lives are spared.  Personal property can be replaced, but life cannot.
