If you’re buying a home, chances are that you want this to be a long-term spot for you and your family. Sometimes when house hunting we can get caught up in the moment and forget to inspect the most important things!

Here’s a quick checklist!

1- Know your budget. It is important that you buy a home at a price that you’re comfortable with.

2- Determine your deal breakers.  Think about the purpose of your home and your lifestyle. What do you expect from this home? More storage? A big backyard for barbecuing and a pool? Extra bedrooms for guests?

3- Check the exterior, not only the front yard! Make sure you look at the exterior from all angles! Recognize a roof in need of repair because that can be a major expense.

4- Look past the colors on the walls. When you step inside the home focus on the structural stuff such as outdated appliances, loose wires, and cracks on the walls.

5- Be hands-on. Literally! Turn on every faucet and light switch, open windows and doors, flush the toilets, even taste the water. That way you can identify problem areas in advance.

6- Hire a home inspector. There’s only so much you can find out just by looking. You’ll want to have a professional to ensure the foundation is solid and the wiring is up to code. Home inspectors can also check for lead paint and wood-eating pests.
