Going Bananas on Maui

Life on Haiku Maui is not so bad.  It is the tropical side of the island, so we get more rain than say Wailea which is desert.  We been having pristine weather lately, sunny with Kona Winds blowing which is perfect for Haiku.  I love spending time in my yard with my wife and dogs,  Last Sunday was a prefect day, we live on 2.5 acres for the last 26 years and planted every plant on the property.

I was strolling around my property with Mia my 9 month old Italian Mastiff, she love giving me a hand carrying branches.  Well as I was checking my fruit trees I notice I had four stocks of bananas going off.  If I don't cut them down the birds will eat them, or they will just fall off the trees.  So I grabbed my saw and start cutting down the trees. Next step is cutting up the stocks and that's where my wife come in.

My wife Ivy loves working in the yard, she is an artist and loves to see blooming flowers through out the yard. So she was saying what are we going to do with all these bananas.  Lets see, there is smoothies, banana bread, you can dip them in chocolate for Valentine's Day, I always like to munch a few before I head out to surf. But we had bananas coming out of our ears. So today we are passing out boxes of bananas to friends.  Usually we have bumper crops of oranges, so there is not shortage of people that love fresh fruit.  So all in all it was a great day.  Life on Maui's northshore is the best. so if you need bananas or a Realtor keep me in mind

maui north shore.

That is so cool that you can grow your own bananas.  I knew they grew papayas and pineapples in the islands, but hadn't considered bananas!

Now I know who to call if I ever make it to Maui again. I was just thinking what are you going to do with all the bananas but you explained it nicely.

Hi Myrl, thanks for the feature. Actually I need to put a new crop of Papaya's in.  I love walking around my property and picking avo's, oranges, mangos and a number of other tropical fruit.

Look out Steven- you may have many visitors to your lovely part of the island after they read this.  Our first home in Florida had a banana tree but I can assure you, they looked nothing like yours. The good thing is that, once peeled, they can be frozen and used in smoothies!!  How beautiful your home is.

Hi Kathy,  my wife and kids, who are grown up now plan planted all kinds of fruit trees.  In Hawaii you can pretty much grow crops and fruit around the year.  I image Florida is pretty much the same.

Mahalo Steven. You paint a picture tht takes me back there Steven Nickens . I grew up partially in Wailea, spent many summers and spring breaks there at my grandfather's condo in Ekolu Village. He lived there part-time since it was built in the 1970's. My bride and I were married at The Grand Wailea Resort and were part of the Maui Tribe- we've seen Willie K. Play countless times at the old Happa's and in Lahaina at Kimo's. The first 45 years of my life were Hawai'ian Style. It's been 5 years since I've been there, life got busy on the mainland. Aloha!
