It took awhile of living around the Hudson Bend area for us to try Sundancer Grill. I think it had been a another restaurant back several years ago and with all the great dining in and around Austin, it just never made it on our radar.
Also, lakefront restaurants don't always have a good food reputation. Sundancer Grill is an exception to the rule.
I could tell I would love the restaurant almost the minute we drove up. Not only did it have great lake views, it was really cute with it's bright red and yellow nautical accents on a pristine white building flanked with windowed garage doors that open on three sides of the restaurant making it a optional open air dining.
The restaurant is also stilted for times when Lake Travis overflows…you may not be able to get to the there when that occurs, but the indoors are kept high and dry. Sundancer is also one of the few restaurants on Lake Travis with a courtesy dock; so you can boat up and dine which is how we came to frequent it during long summer days on the lake. The patio is also dog friendly and there is a playground for kids to play while parents enjoy a long meal with ice cold drinks.
The restaurant can be wide open with with amazing lake breezes during our long summer; or it can be closed up tight with a the fireplace crackling into the winter months.
And they offer really good classic American food and drinks including incredible specials.
Two for one burger night is the best, with different burger options in large baskets overflowing with fries. My favorite is the blue cheese burger. A burger piled high with cheese, bacon and veggies; so large you have to cut it in two for a chance to get it in your mouth. The fries are well-seasoned and the perfect accompaniment to the tangy blue cheese.
They feature a regular menu with seafood, steaks, fried appetizers, salads and burgers/sandwiches. There is also a special brunch menu on the weekends with all the favorites represented.
The restaurant is located right off the water, with views of Lake Travis and the adjacent marina, with boats docked and some for rent. In the summer, the weekend crowd come right off their boats in swimwear and settle in for some sustenance to keep them enjoying their water sport adventures.
The crowd is friendly and familiar with conversations going on across the bar and across tables. They are know for their catfish, fried jalapeños and pickles and the Carlos and Charlies Famous Chicken Changitas. The Sundancer is a place for a casual meal amongst the local crowd where you can enjoy the lake and the lake breezes.
Next time you are on the lake or anywhere around Hudson Bend, stop in the Sundancer Grill for great food and great views.
