Jade Trees and a little history by Endre Barath a Los Angeles Realtor
Having lived on the East Coast I always loved Jade Trees, these small trees were very expensive, but I did not mind and kept growing them inside my homes. Fast forward to 20+ years ago, when we relocated to Los Angeles, I was amazed how Jade Trees grow on the side of the road, some homes have them almost like fences.
One day we received a small branch from one of Diane’s coworkers, I want to say about fifteen years ago, next thing you know we had to twice re-plant them (check out the two pots).
BTW did you know that Jade Trees are better known as Crassula ovata, commonly known as jade plant, friendship tree, lucky plant, or money tree, is a succulent plant with small pink or white flowers. It is native to South Africa and Mozambique, and is common as a houseplant worldwide.
Now, fast forward again to three years ago, when we bought our house in the back yard next to the neighbor’s fence there was this wildly growing Jade Tree, almost like a fence. Diane wanted to cut it back, trim it and the list goes on and on. Yes, I won this battle, so we both won, now it is a bit shaped and not as wild as three years ago, but check it out anyway.
Some people call a Jade Plant/Tree aka the Money Plant anyway. Jade Plant are very popular because they are so incredibly easy to grow. Diane and I seldom do anything with them and interestingly we went through two years of drought with minimal backyard watering. In spite of us they survived and prospered.
Usually the biggest problem these wonderful plants face is over watering. Well thanks to California Drought and Monday, Wednesday & Friday watering this has not been a problem for us. Keep in mind often Diane would only water twice a week in the back yard. So, we actually helped the Jades grow rather than dry out.
Did you know that Jade Plants can be reproduced by simply cutting a step and planting it in the ground or dirt? Well as you can see if we wanted to we, could have completely surround our home with Jade Trees, we have enough to cut to Propagate.
So, you are wondering what made me write about Jade Trees in Westchester, CA.?? Well the answer is easy, one of our friends Dick Greenberg loves Jade Trees and he wrote about them a day or so ago that he has grown and nurtured them, well let’s just say over a long period of time. So, this post and pictures are for you Dick Greenberg . Enjoy and if you want more we can certainly share we have plenty.
Just for the record Diane and I do not have a green thumb and they managed to not only survive but grow despite us.
