Who Decides What A Meaningful Life Is?
A Sunday Respite...Life, Animated
Recently I saw the documentary Life, Animated. It is nominated for an award in the 89th Annual Academy Awards ceremony which will be broadcast a week from now on Sunday, February 26. I don’t know if it will win in its category. It faces some very stiff competition. Like other nominated films I have seen, it doesn’t matter if it wins. Well, at least to me. And although nominees are often heard to say something that includes “it’s just an honor to be nominated…” I suspect that winning an Academy Award must be pretty cool. Let’s face it...it’s a freakin’ Oscar!
I appreciate movies that move me. Make me laugh. Or ponder. Sometimes both. Occasionally even more.
While Life, Animated is not a laugh riot it does have the occasional cute moment while addressing a subject that is quite serious. Autism.
Prior to the release of the film, I recall reading about the story which is the basis for the documentary. Do you believe that art speaks to us? I do. Whether hanging on a wall. In a theater. In a garden. While turning the pages of a book. Listening. Or a visit to a museum. I believe this film shows that art inspires.
Without giving away too much, despite its title, this is not an animated movie. Not that’s there’s anything wrong with that but generally that is a genre that doesn’t appeal to me. Yes, there are references(many) and some clips of Disney movies along with some unique animated art as part of the story, the film primarily blends home movies, interviews and situations to tell the story. There is love. And struggle. Of doing whatever it takes. There are roadblocks. Setbacks. And the question that inspired this post: Who decides what a meaningful life is?
Who...indeed. While I saw it in a theater - Life, Animated is available to download in the traditional places. Enjoy your Sunday. Thank you.
