People are trading in oceans and beachfront living for mountains and lakes, according to United Van Lines in their 40th Annual Movers Study. They conduct the study to track movement from state to state and to understand why people move.
In terms of people changing addresses, the Northwest region ranks #1 in number of people relocating into the area, and the state of Idaho ranks #3 among all states.
With the exception of Vermont, #2 on the list,
people are heading to the western states. The Northwest has been a very popular region in general the past several years. Retirees especially are making new homes in the top inbound states.
More than 27% of those moving to Idaho are 65 or older and more than a third are 55 to 64.
A quarter of those relocating to Idaho said they were doing so specifically to retire.
Here's an interesting tidbit: retirees are relocating at such a fast pace that they are overshadowing the movement of millennials to urban areas.
