Shrub-Like Begonia, 'Caravan', Longwood Gardens, Kennett Square, PA
This photograph attracted a lot of interest when I posted it in a number of Facebook groups. These flowers are very small and it is easy to miss the beauty if you do not take a very close look. You will want to have your camera in hand when you visit Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, PA.
Subhash Sharma "These lovely flowers are associated with fanciful matters and also have a cautionary note to say ‘Beware‘. Originally from South and Central America, Africa and southern Asia but are now grown world over. Because of their showy flowers of white, pink, scarlet or yellow colour and often attractively marked leaves, many species and innumerable hybrids of begonias are cultivated. A French botanical patron by the name Charles Plumier coined the name Begoniaceae for this genus. It pays tribute to a former governor of the colony of Haiti, Michel Bégon. Bégon recommended Plumier to King Louis XIV as an official plant collector, for which Plumier promised him immortalized in a plant's name. With this in mind, begonias represent gratitude or sly enticement."
Mr. Sharma is a Facebook friend from India. He now lives in Dublin, Ireland and frequently comments on my photographs.
