The "Click That Reverberated Around The World"

The story about Monica Lewinsky is known around the globe and will live on as part of the American history during the Clinton Administration and famous sex scandals forever. Like most people, I watched, listened, and read about Monica's story. Today I felt compassion for this young woman who was 22 years old when the scandal began and it's all because I listened to her side of the story on TED. Not that I condone her actions, but it has made me more cognizant of distorted news stories and judgment.

Why is a Real Estate Agent writing this story on Social Media? Because I have a social responsibility to be ethical and responsible. Monica Lewinsky serves as a reminder that everyone has a "responsibility towards freedom of expression." As she so poignantly shares, the "price of shame," and "walking a mile in someone else's headlines," is an emotion "more intense than happiness and anger." In this TED Talk, Monica describes the consequences of public humiliation as a result of her personal actions that resulted in shame becoming a permanent scar on her soul known by all on the "dark side of Social Media."

As I listened to what Monica Lewinsky had to say, I couldn't help but think about the woman in the Bible known as Mary Magdalene and the impact she had on religious morality or about the story on social behavior in the book/movie "The Scarlet Letter." In a manner of speaking, there are millions of examples of shame and guilt since the beginning of time. But Social Media, politics, and religion has changed the way gossip, lies, and mistakes lives on in cyberspace forever. In the world in which we live, privacy is a misnomer. My take-away - think twice about forwarding information that contains gossip or believing everything you hear on the INTERNET and Social Media. The worst evils on earth today causes suffering. Some die when rumors are spread with just one click. How has my perception of Monica Lewinsky changed today? Fatal clicks can ruin reputations or cause suicide that may "reverberates around the world!"

I was also impressed with her when I saw this talk. It's sad to think how young she was, and how "she" became the scapegoat. :( Men in power can be so intoxicating to some, not to me. I see their puffed -up feathers and run like the wind. Lol.

Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD - I didn't know what to expect but when I saw it was a TED Talk, I knew it would be good and I was not disappointed. Honestly, I didn't realize how young she was either. She paid the price and from her speech, she grew up faster than most girls her age. Kudos to her having the courage to take responsibility and be willing to get strong messages out to the public, especially young adults.

What has always upset me about this entire story, Patricia, is that the other "half" of the party paid little price in terms of public recrimination. He paid a price for lying but not for the act and not for decades either.

Nina Hollander - She sure did pay the price! Humiliation was a family affair. I agree with you 110%!

I had seen this in my youtube feed but not got around to watching yet. I actually never keep up with all the videos, podcasts etc I am trying to follow. If I did, I don't think I would be doing my job just watching videos all day.

I have reached a point that I am sick and tired of all the spin from all sides that I don't want to actually read news. Which is dangerous because then people get away with stuff. But it is hard to know what is really true and what is hype.

So, not sharing things such as gossip is a good first step.

Nick & Trudy Vandekar - I understand where you're coming from. It is only because it was a TED Talk that I had to watch and I'm glad I did. TED talks do not promote trash. It's a very powerful and worthwhile speech and something every parent of teens and young adults should see.

Patricia I have not seen this T talk. I remember the story well and I thought at the time that I wish she hadn't at such a young age been 'memorized' by a powerful guy. She did get the short end of the stick and he took advantage of her age and inexperience as men in power sometimes do. I stay out of all crazy stuff on SM....walk away fast.

Anna Banana Kruchten - This TED Talk is worth taking the time to listen. She doesn't go into reliving the events of those horrible days but eloquently delivers very powerful messages to young adults on topics they need to hear.

Patricia the whole social media and even news media has gotten more and more crazy.  I will watch a speech and then listen to a reporter report on the speech and I sit there scratching my  head wondering if they are talking about a different speech than the one I listen to because what is being reported is very very different.

Michael Jacobs - You have the right attitude and someone I respect because you don't judge people, nor do you hold a grudge when things didn't go your way. Respectfully, that's the way real adults and professionals should behave.

Thank you, Roy Kelley - Now that the years have gone by, it's good for people to see and learn how Monica Lewinsky grew up through those difficult years and she's a good messenger to young adults who are so vulnerable too. Consequences just aren't worth it but when it happens you learn, you have a responsibility to others.

Patricia- I will watch the video later but I have to agree with Nina Hollander , Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD , and Anna Banana Kruchten this was a young intern entrusted into the care of adults who should have behaved and known better.  The other half suffered no consequence whatsoever.  If she was humiliated it is only by those who think so. These days we have to check and double check the news that is being fed to us.
