The story about Monica Lewinsky is known around the globe and will live on as part of the American history during the Clinton Administration and famous sex scandals forever. Like most people, I watched, listened, and read about Monica's story. Today I felt compassion for this young woman who was 22 years old when the scandal began and it's all because I listened to her side of the story on TED. Not that I condone her actions, but it has made me more cognizant of distorted news stories and judgment.
Why is a Real Estate Agent writing this story on Social Media? Because I have a social responsibility to be ethical and responsible. Monica Lewinsky serves as a reminder that everyone has a "responsibility towards freedom of expression." As she so poignantly shares, the "price of shame," and "walking a mile in someone else's headlines," is an emotion "more intense than happiness and anger." In this TED Talk, Monica describes the consequences of public humiliation as a result of her personal actions that resulted in shame becoming a permanent scar on her soul known by all on the "dark side of Social Media."
As I listened to what Monica Lewinsky had to say, I couldn't help but think about the woman in the Bible known as Mary Magdalene and the impact she had on religious morality or about the story on social behavior in the book/movie "The Scarlet Letter." In a manner of speaking, there are millions of examples of shame and guilt since the beginning of time. But Social Media, politics, and religion has changed the way gossip, lies, and mistakes lives on in cyberspace forever. In the world in which we live, privacy is a misnomer. My take-away - think twice about forwarding information that contains gossip or believing everything you hear on the INTERNET and Social Media. The worst evils on earth today causes suffering. Some die when rumors are spread with just one click. How has my perception of Monica Lewinsky changed today? Fatal clicks can ruin reputations or cause suicide that may "reverberates around the world!"
