As a realtor one come across a spectrum of people. While some are shoddy people trying to take advantage of people in service industry, many are honest folks needing real estate advice and service.
I tried my best to meet their needs often going extra steps. A lady on a wheel chair could not get inside so she asked about the home layout and I described to her and took photos for her. I asked her how she got there as I do not see a car. She said she took the bus and powered electric chair ran over a mile to get there. I handed her my business card and felt good I could help a handicapped person. A couple days later she called. "Do you know if this home is sold?" I replied: "Let me look. No, ma'am it is still waiting for a good offer". She asked me if I can present her making an offer. "I will be delighted to. How much do you want to offer?" 60 cents on a dollar! What? "You must give me 50% of your commission in return". This home although needing work will sell about 120% listed price. No, ma'am you can find a discount realtor. Sorry.
As it turns out the handicapped stranger is not an angel as I thought. She was looking for a basement bargain and a stepping stone to run a realtor over.
I know of a handy man. He gave me a referral and I took a call. It is from a frustrated divorced vet. He does not trust realtors and would like to own a house. All realtors gave him a hard time and do not want to help him. I sent him to a mortgage officer. He said bankers are crooks. So I ask about his income he gets $1800 a month unemployed and is a vet. Granted, one can get a VA loan with no down. Who will lend him half a million dollars for a condo without a steady income? He wants a fixer upper home. That often means cash only. I replied that is about $700,000 and you need substaintial higher income to be eligible. He said you sound like the rest of them but you do spend time explaining to me. Can you help me to find a room? I replied: " Do you know Craigslist?".
Over the holidays I got a call. Some one works at Z called. Can you help my parents move close to this area? Sure this is what I do. I showed them a few cottages including a Lincoln log cabin. During home showing the Santa Cruz mountain soaking storm made showing properties more like an adventure. I tripped by a rock on a hill and a sharp tree stem cut across and into my face. The sharp tree stump could cut through my eye ball. It protruded into face next to a vein. Well, that was during wet home showing. The clients took me to a hospital 20 miles away. All that time I thought I will have a zipper stitches across my face and joked with my doctor that my new look will be eligible for Frankenstein-alike contest. Doctor said you surely got a sense of humer. Ha ha ha! That was a relaxed moment considering the circumstance.
I have a smaller scar without the blood stain and it is not so noticeable now. Photo below shown 1 week later in the redwood forest during second showing. They actually bought this property and we just closed it yesterday.
Second showing of a home after a fatal lucky fall
When I’m successful in putting together a deal, it’s a warm rewarding feeling. What you put into some pay many do not. That is the nature of business. It is a great feeling that I can help the needy to fulfill their dreams. The rest is just how people behave.
