And The Winner Is...

There's a lot of great movies that have won the Academy Award,

and a lot of great movies that haven't.

You just do the best you can.

Clint Eastwood

So it’s a big day in La La Land … you know the Arrival of the Academy Awards ceremony.  Whether you watch or not, a little after Moonlight hits locally, those shiny Oscars will no longer be Hidden Figures waiting to be awarded to some very fortunate and hopefully deserving winners.

Yes, I admit it.  I will watch.  And yes we may hear some political talk -- a jab or two(or more) about this or that.  A joke or skit or dance routine that fails to deliver.  But maybe...just maybe there will be some Fences mended and all will be right with the world. You know...living happily ever after...just like in the movies. Okay - I know that last scene is highly unlikely. However, come Hell or High Water, whether you are living in Manchester By The Sea or closer to the action taking place in Los Angeles, there’s no Lyin’(or Lion for that matter) this event continues to be widely watched worldwide even though viewership has declined.

Oh, if you are a very well-informed cinephile, you may have noticed my exclusion of one of the nine nominated films for Best Picture.  Hacksaw Ridge.  Although I’ve seen a lot of movies in the past year, I have not seen this one.   Yet. Maybe I will someday -- right after I view some others recommended by Dick Greenberg.

Tonight I am asking for your help. I call upon you to draw from the depths of your being to prove that we are a human race.

To prove that our love outweighs our need to hate.

That our compassion is more compelling than our need to blame.

That our sensitivity to those in need is stronger than our greed.

That our ability to reason overcomes our fear.

And that at the end of each of our lives,

we can look back and be proud that we have treated others

with the kindness, dignity and respect

that every human being deserves.

Elizabeth's speech is just as applicable today as it was delivered in 1993. She left an imprint of love on many human beings.

I thought you were spoofing on last night's show, Michael, and then I realized no, you wrote this blog before the show. It sort of dilutes the build up to the magnificent last firework display when you have what until now had been called a Steve Harvey moment.

Reading the message from Elizabeth Taylor gave me goosebumps. Written so long ago and yet so relevent to today!

There are only a few of the nominated movies I care to see this year. I will wait to get them from Netflix.

I don't watch these events, and didn't watch them last night (but who could miss all the new about the big gaffe!), but I definitely remember reading about Elizabeth Taylor's speech that remains so true today. Wish so many more could take it to heart and practice this today.

Very clever, Michael Jacobs - impressive!  I thought reading this was going to be about last nights spoof but, I can't wait to see that post!  LOL

Seriously, I thought there would be a bit more political digs than there were so, that was a pleasant surprise.  The 'Steve Harvey Moment' had to be the best ever!  I was working and had the TV on and listened here and there but, happened to be looking up at the screen when the excitement happened!  Of all times to be watching - just in time to catch the spectacle!  Just WOW!

Hope you have a great week!

I watch so few movies so the awards carry little interest for me, but people do love to see the actors on the red carpet

Nothing quite like a surprise ending to create a memorable experience although I'm not sure it's the best kind of memorable.

What a clever and fun post Michael Jacobs and I love the quote from Elizabeth Taylor.  I don't watch the Oscars but I still enjoy movies and although I have yet to see several of those nominated...I have seen Hacksaw Ridge and it is wonderful.

We watched the last half hour which was the best part with the faux pas that happened. It almost looked like a setup. I have several films I need to see and hope they come to my area.

Thank you, Lisa Von Domek --- after hearing more about it, Hacksaw Ridge is on my list to see.

The last half hour was definitely the time to watch the show Debbie Reynolds and then yesterday's news about one of the tourists who were paraded through the ceremony continued to make the Academy Awards newsworthy --- well, kinda.

Michael, just happened upon this gem. You are speaking to my heart, and to a big part of what my work/life history consumed. Movies and the arts play such a dramatic role in teaching us what is really important and pertinent in the world we live in. Sometimes forgiving, sometimes not. But, ALWAYS brings food for thought and great discussion. What a wonderful Awards show, I thought with a twist at the end that proves, life reflects art. Who could have written this kind of ending?

I've not seen La La Land. I did see Moonlight and didn't care for it at all. The dude that won best actor from Moonlight wasn't even in the entire movie and to me his acting wasn't all that stellar. Denzel Washington should have won something for Fences with all those lines he had to remember. I think he talked almost nonstop throughout the movie. But Hidden Figures  -- that was the picture of the year and it's killing the others at the box office -- at least it is here in the South. Thanks for allowing me my 2 cents worth.

Michael Jacobs - I am such a movie lover, it's ridiculously pleasurable! I hope you get to watch the Oscars this weekend. I saw Darkest Hour and Lady Bird. Haven't seen the others. If I had to choose between those two, I'd pick Darkest Hour. I was so disappointed in Lady Bird. I haven't seen The Shape of Water, but my bet would be on that one.

I hope you are in good spirits, healthy, and happy. You are so missed here on ActiveRain. Thank you for your likes. They mean a lot to me. I hope you come back soon.
