You can choose your fate

By
Home Stager with The Dovian Group, LLC

A few weeks ago, I went to the Cheesecake Factory with my sister Doris and girlfriend Trena to have a leisurely lunch. It was a beautiful day, so we asked for outdoor seating.  A few moments after the host seated us, out of the corner of my eye, I see another host seat a woman adjacent to our table. She is wearing a Realtor badge. I whisper to Doris and Trena, she's a Realtor, I think I'll give her my card.  Just as I am about to approach her, she receives a phone call. I lean back and continue chatting all the while keeping an eye on this woman.  Well after her call ended, I walked over and said, "Excuse me but I noticed your tag and wanted to introduce myself, my name is Anita and I'm a Stager, may I give you my card"?  She looks at me and says, "Yes, someone was just asking me for a Stager and I don't know any".  We exchange cards, moments later, her party arrived and we all enjoy our lunches.

I put her card in my purse, without paying much attention to who she was.  Trust me when I tell you, earlier in life, walking up to someone cold and introducing myself was not been something I would attempt. However, I am quickly learning that you can choose your fate and alter the course of your life by merely choosing to be bold and stepping out of your comfort zone!

Something about the card haunted me. I looked at it several times before attempting to call. I even lost it amongst the abyss I call a desk, for a few days!  When I finally found it, I called her three times receiving voicemail each time, on the fourth try I decided to leave a message.  I said, "Hello Ms. Sunshine (pseudonym), we met a few weeks ago, I'm the Stager from the Cheesecake factory.  I would like to drop off marketing materials for you to review. Please call to let me know if this is okay." I don't know about the rest of you but I no longer risk handing a parcel of my materials to just anyone. Their destiny may be the circle file as soon as you or I leave the building. Currently, no one can afford to allow that to happen. It's bad for the environment, not to mention our pocketbooks!

Two days later, my phone rang. It was the agent calling she said, "Hello Anita, this is Mary Sunshine we met at the Cheesecake Factory, feel free to drop off your materials.  I probably will not be in the office when you come. We are merging three offices and I'm extremely busy.  If you leave them in a package addressed to me I will get them."  I said, "Thank you, Ms. Sunshine I'll do that" and we hung up.

A couple of days later while assembling the materials and handwriting a card, to thank her for allowing me to court the firm.  I asked my husband, Carl to review my note. I believe four eyes are better than two are.  Actually, in our case that would mean eight eyes are greater than four, because we both wear glasses!  As he suggested items I should edit he asked, "What is her title?" I looked at him with furrowed brow and said, "I don't know, let me look at the card."  I ruffled through the abyss, find the card and blurt out, "Oh my God, she is a Regional Vice President"!

The old Anita would have missed an excellent opportunity, as she would not risk rejection.  So to all of us who sometimes feel shy and awkward because the voice in our head is asking, "What if you're rejected?"  I am finally starting to say, "Be quiet, you don't know what you're talking about". Then I walk right up and say, "Hi, I'm Anita and I'm a Stager!"

As of this post, nothing has happened regarding our chance encounter, but this may be my big break!  Wish me luck!  To be continued.

Anita

Hi Anita,

Thank You for this special post!

Opportunities are all around us all the time.  Most people miss them.  You didn't!

I love to meet people.  I have become friends with History Makers, World Shakers and Destiny Changers.  Most of them look like normal people.

I met a man in Orange, CA about 20 years ago who owns real estate from San Diego to San Francisco.  He wore blue jeans and drove a Toyota pickup so people would treat him as just an average guy and not like a multi millionaire!

My wife and I have met the most wonderful people in miraculous ways while doing staging and redesigns that we would have never met any other way!

I always pray that I will be open to connect with the right people at the right time in the right place!

Everyone needs to feel that they are deeply loved, completely accepted and highly valued!

Thank You again for your post!

Congratualations on your connection. In Real Estate, everyone we meet is a potential client. Stepping out of that comfort zone is the first step.

Anita- I am so impressed that you stepped out of your comfort zone, something I struggle with all the time. I just got an email from an agent I work with all the time. It said, simply "if you don't ask, you won't get it" which just makes good sense. I also want to mention that you approached her while she was alone, so you didn't interrupt her lunch with friends, which may have contributed to her positive response! Good luck!

Gary,

I'm pleased to know there are trailblazers like Linda who have gone before me!

Dan B.,

You are correct; it takes practice, practice, practice to get over your fears and confidence to step up to the plate.

Dan W.,

Thank you for the profound words of encouragement.

Matthew,

Growth is never comfortable.

Elaine,

Thanks for letting me know I'm not alone in my struggle.

LOL IT GOES TO SHOW THAT IT PAYS TO BE NICE :)

Just today I befriended a meter-man, who turned out to be a house inspector. So now we may do some business together! You just never know where your next job can come from these days.

I applaud your effort going up to her! That takes balls, which I don't have ;) Great story, I can't wait to hear how it's going to work out for you!!

Cheers,

Cindy

Anita,

I love your story.  I think it is great that you were

1)  Thinking business even at a girls lunch

2)  Brave enough to step outside your comfort zone

3) Very polite in your approach and follow-up

It will pay off!  Good luck and I can't wait to hear the next chapter!

Anita, great story, and I am guessing it'll have a happy ending.  Why?  Because we get what we focus on and you are so positive and self assured...I love your spirit.

The key to this post was when you said "Trust me when I tell you, earlier in life, walking up to someone cold and introducing myself was not been something I would attempt. However, I am quickly learning that you can choose your fate and alter the course of your life by merely choosing to be bold and stepping out of your comfort zone!"  So many of us can identify with that.

You go girl.  Good luck, can't wait to see the post when you tell us how it all turned out.

Anita - good for you! Being outgoing like that is something I struggle with BIG TIME! Sometimes I can't believe I'm a real estate agent. And if I don't believe it - who else will, right? Your blog will be an ispiration and the next time I ignore an opportunity because I am shy and unsure .. I will think about you! Looking forward to hearing the continuation...... (good luck)

Cindy,

We never know whom we will encounter, so it's best to be aware and conscious of whom we are dealing with. Everyone, no matter his or her station in life, has a purpose. Being sensitive and open is best. Most people would have sneered at the meter-man. Instead, you went beyond his station, treated him with respect and found out he's more than just a meter-man. In turn, he opened up to you!

Elle,

Staging is my full-time job. I am always looking for an opportunity to meet Realtors, as they are our best advocates. When I saw her badge, I thought "serious Realtor" and gave it a shot. We will see how it turns out.

Terrilynn,

I think most of us have "fight or flight" instinct at work. This instinct makes us pass on opportunities. We over analyze things and the voice in our heads talks us out of opportunities. The majority of people are nice, although we approach strangers from a place of fear and apprehension.  I wish I were one of those outgoing people who never met a stranger. However, I have to work "hard" at taking the chance and stepping out of my comfort zone. Who knows that day may have been the Realtor's lucky day!

Georgia,

Thank you, ActiveRain is wonderful!

Sharon,

I believe 95% of people have a fear of doing something new every day. 10% decide to get over it and take a chance, let's be part of the 10%! I dropped off my package to "Ms. Sunshine's" office today. The Realtor staffing the desk was intrigued by the box itself.  The decorative box, consisted of a handwritten note, photo album of before and after photos, brochures, postcards and my business cards.  The box is hers to keep. She can use it either in her home or office.  I hope she likes it as much as the person at the desk does.

Love this post. It is very true. Like the verse in the bible,Ask and ye shall receive. Thats why I always wear my Exit pin and badge just about everytime I dress up now. And I give my cards to just about everybody that I meet now. You never know where that next big sale is going to come from. Great post.
