Ladda was born in Bangkok, Thailand back in 1968 to Franklin and Lami. Her father a U.S. Marine died in 2005. She attended Singapore American School and at the International School in Bangkok. The family moved to Hawaii where she graduated from McKinley High School and the University of Hawaii in 1989 with a Bachelor of Arts in political science.
She joined the United States Army Reserve in 1992 and flew helicopters. She was working on her Ph.D. at Northern Illinois University when she was deployed to Iraq in 2004. During a mission, she was co-piloting a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter when it was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade. Resulting, in the loss of her right leg near the hip and her left leg below the knee. She was the first female double amputee from the Iraq war.
She received the Purple Heart, the Air Medal and the Army Commendation Medal. Retired from the Illinois Army National Guard in 2014 as a lieutenant colonel. So now the rest of the story. You may not know but I’m writing about Ladda Tammy Duckworth she is an American member of the Democratic Party serving this great country as a junior United States Senator from Illinois. She is also the first Asian American woman elected to Congress in Illinois, the first disabled woman to be elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and the first member of Congress born in Thailand.
