Wordless Wednesday- Looking for Babies

Spring is on its way (although those of you in the northeast may want to take exception to that) and that means it’s nesting time!

We’ve been keeping an eye on Green Cay Wetlands to see if there were any nests yet.  We haven’t run across any..yet...but wanted to share this nest we found a few years ago.

red winged blackbird green cay wetlands

It is the nest of a Red-winged Blackbird.  It’s just like Mother Nature to give all of the color and pizzazz to the males of the species.

The male Red-winged blackbird is just that...black with a red splash of color on the wing.

The female, however, is blah-brown...in fact I had no idea they were related when I first saw them.

The male will perch on a pole or tree and oversee their residence...making sure that nothing or no one comes too close. They will attack if a larger bird or human gets too close. I can attest to that because while photographing the nest, which was several feet away, the male swooped down and let my head know he was there!

If you’re out, take some time to see what Mother Nature is doing. She might surprise you.

Wonderful photos. I usually have 3 or 4 nests in the bushes across the front of my house every year. They actually arrived a bit early this year so I won't be trimming for awhile.

Kathy it's so fun this time of year!  Pretty soon there will be little baby quail all over the place. I've also seen quite a few road runners this past week - which is a rare thing. So I'm guessing we'll soon have baby road runners too this year.  I'll have to share the story of plush baby chicks and birdies one of these days - it's a hoot!

Hi Kathy - It's a little early here for the babies, but they're busy making them. We just had our first herons return to the lake, and the geese have set up shop, along with some ducks. Thankfully, no sign of the red-winged blackbirds yet - we have dozens of them in the summer, and they bully our house finches and eat all of the birdseed we put out.
