Many times, I have driven by this coffee shop and kept telling Diane we need to stop in, we were either late going or late coming back and we kept missing this place. Today I had business in Redondo Beach and it was early afternoon, normally I will not have a third cup of coffee, but today was a good day to stop.
Over the past twenty years I noticed that the Green Coffee Shops that were the symbol of being affluent, hip, cool and trendy have fallen to the way side. I am glad, because I consider myself a coffee snob. Most of you who know me I am a wine and Champaign snob too… but coffee snob primarily. Any time I see a new coffee establishment I must check it out and make my own judgement.
Now with that said, we pulled over today and had to check it out. I am a firm believer that, if you order a latte it tells a lot about the place as to how the establishment makes it and the quality of the product is a giveaway too.
We walked in and I saw a couple of huge bags of coffee beans, then I looked around and saw a coffee roasting machine. I was in coffee snob heaven, as I ordered my Latte, I knew this would be good. I watched the barista make it and I had to ask him a few questions: Do you roast your own coffee? The answer was a resounding ‘Yes every Tuesday around seven am’, needless to say I would never be there, so I asked how does it smell? He laughed he said the whole neighborhood smells it because they have an exhaust fan that pushes it out.
This immediately brought back memories, when I was a child my father used to roast coffee beans every evening over the stove top to get rid of the “cooking smells”. The barista got a smile as I shared this story with him too. Keep in mind, he was in his 20’s seeing this old man reminisce about when he was a child and his dad roasting coffee beans. I asked if he could show me the beans and indeed he took a handful out and it was green, not as green as I remembered, but that was over 50+ years ago,😊).
So, if you are in Redondo Beach or nearby this is a must destination visit, provided you want good coffee. BTW this was one of the best and smoothest Latte I had in …well in a long time. BTW they are right next door to the NEV place I just wrote about. In case you missed it check out the link ( The Boy & The Bear in Redondo Beach )
