Spring is here in the Northern states already. But, before you start digging and thinking about planting, here are some must dos and don’ts.

Don’t walk on your yard or garden before the ground is stable, meaning AFTER it doesn’t give way under your weight. You will do more harm than good going across lawn or garden until the soil is dry.
Don’t overestimate plants ability to stay ready to plant from the garden centers until your dates for last frost. You can kill perfectly healthy plants and seedlings by putting them out too early without protection. Don’t rush the season and kill them.

You can put out seedlings and plants in a greenhouse or window box type enclosure to harden them off. But, keep an eye on what your long-range and short-range temps will be and cover if necessary or bring them in to a garage or enclosed porch if temps drop off.
Starting seed is easy if you use good sterilized seed starter soil which is light enough to support a new root system. The key is to transplant at the right time, too. I will have more on that later.

I know you can’t wait….neither can the birds. I hear them earlier and earlier. They are as anxious to get this show on the road as you and I are.
Patience is the key.
Best, Ron
