Early Spring Flowers in Kentlands: Crocus
When you take early spring photowalks through Kentlands, our home community within the City of Gaithersburg, Maryland, you may see Crocus flowers poking through the snow. We know that the snow will soon be gone and more spring flowers will be showing their colors.
Subhash Sharma "The name of these lovely Crocus or Krokusis flowers of Greek origin (Greek: Κρόκος)is based on a mortal youth who, because he were unhappy with his love affair with Smilax, was turned by the gods into a plant bearing his name, the crocus. The first crocus seen in the Netherlands, where crocus species are not native, were from corms brought back in the 1560s from Constantinople by the Holy Roman Emperor's ambassador to the Sublime Porte, Ogier Ghiselin de Busbecq.
Mr. Sharma is a Facebook friend from India. He now lives in Dublin, Ireland and frequently comments on my photographs as I post them on Facebook.
