2017 Board Test Week: Variable Conditions Close Out Crested Butte Test

Mike Horn brought Board Week, a split board test, to Crested Butte, Colorado from Vermont just about a decade ago and has remained a fundamental member of the testing team. “Even a lot of the terrain in the ski area, once you get off the beaten path, has a backcountry feel to it,” says Horn. “It’s super challenging and you can get as spicy as you want.”

A crew of 11 split boarders spent the last week riding at Crested Butte Mountain Resort and the surrounding backcountry at Irwin Guides, putting more than 20 splitboards to the test. Irwin Guides Cat Skiing provides access to some of the best snow and terrain in all of Colorado. However, as we all know, backcountry conditions will vary and this past week we saw temperatures spiking well into the 40’s during the day and falling drastically at night providing some of the toughest conditions of Board Week. While the guides looked for smooth snow, “variable” spring conditions were the hand that was dealt. These challenging conditions forced this year’s testers to push the limits of these splitboards, changing the reviews of many of these boards. Boards that earned high ranking reviews earlier in the week were a disappointment to testers after failing to maneuver more difficult, defiant terrain. One board’s sidewalls literally exploded navigating these variable conditions.

All and all, the testers had a great time and enjoyed the luxurious amenities offered by the Irwin Operation. From the plush cab of the snowcat to great food and beers, a good time was had by all during Board Test Week.
