Net 3.0: Widgets, RSS And The Replacement Of Newsprint

True to the advertising campaign that you've seen on TV  or the web...If you  want to know the next big thing on a PC will be, than look to the MAC first!  So what is the next big thing?  The Mac dashboard has been using Widgets for quite some time now. So what are Widgets? They are small little desktop apps that use HTML, XML, AJAX or a myriad of of other code to bring you a specific piece of information to your desktop or mobile device. I have been a big fan of desktop widgets and my favorite has been Pageflakes.   Of course our friends at Google have theirs too,  www.desktop.google.com.  Using the Google  widget desktop really does bring web browsing to the next  level of genius.

For those of you that have loaded Vista, you will note that the new windows operating system is ready to go with Widgets. Widgets have been creeping into the PC world from Mac. There are thousands of FREE widgets available for your desktop, website or blogging pleasure. Keep in mind that this is just the beginning as far as widgets are concerned.  Once again, an obscure concept, used mostly by geeks and x'ers is creating a new revolution on our desktop and changing the world!

Take a look at this article, which is an interview with Tariq Krim, from Netvibes. (be the way, my new favorite widget desktop is the Netvibes platform).  The Next Net: Will Widgets Kill the Webpage? (Exclusive Netvibes video). I think after you read this, it will be easy to ask the question "will Widgets kill NEWSPAPAER print" as the medium to receive and read your news.  YEP, they will.  Think about getting your "newspaper" delivered to you in real time, with every custom piece of information you want to know about. Your favorite cartoons, news from anywhere around the world including embedded bloggers with sat cams, mortgage rates, stock quotes, new listings, family picture albums, any TV show in the world....it's LIMITLESS and its all about YOU.

Netvibes_example_page_1

Let's look at  the Netvibes page with its tabs.  It's really just like a newspaper.  I am a big user of Bloglines for capturing all of my RSS feeds.  So I normally I would go to that platform to read my feeds.  However, the new widget desktop platforms allow you a to get a better look and feel for your RSS feeds as well as tons of other data including you tube video, cartoons and pictures.  Just like IE7 and Firefox 2, all of your pages are tabbed for easy reference.  The really cool thing about Netvibes is that have additional tabs available from their community users. And like all community sites, we can benefit from someone else's work.  So someone who did a whole load of research for let's say,  great web 2.0 RSS feeds, has got them all ready to go for you on a tab that you just add to your desktop.

So how does this relate to the Real estate business?  I think that this just relates to being a more organized and functional business person regardless of your profession.  But as I have said before, you had better be smarter than the consumer or why would they hire you?

Tariq Krim's article was about how Yahoo and AOL portals, web pages, complete with all the advertising would become replaced by user built custom desktops.  A dear friend of mine uses the line that every time someone in US dies,  newspapers lose another subscriber.  So instead of having to die, why not replace your newspaper with a custom widget based desktop.  You could have personal tabs, business tabs, technology tabs and real estate tabs as well as any of your favorite bloggers  Every time you tune into your Desktop you can be dialed into a desktop that is all about you.   Give it a try.  It's Free and it's Fun.

Let's Move!
I don't know - the more I learn, the more I learn that there is to learn.  I once thought that when we got this far along, we would slow down in our progress.  But the more we learn the faster we are able to develop technologies.  One can no longer keep up on everything as one could do in the past.
