The 3 Brands I Trust

Ron and Alexandra Seigel have invited us to share our top 3 brands and why. Tomorrow is the deadline for this challenge, and some extra points, so if you haven’t shared yours time is running out.

I thought this would be easy but it really wasn’t, at least not for me. And perhaps that makes this more of a meaningful challenge, which is all good!

It was kinda fun to think back about brands I have used, some of which have fallen by the wayside because of product or service issues. I’ve had several vendors related to home maintenance I have used over the years in my business and due to significant goofs they, unfortunately, lost me as a client…and potential referrals to buyers and sellers.

SPROUTS

I have been a big fan of this natural and organic food grocer, also known as Sprouts Farmers Market, since moving to Carlsbad back in 2005. Sprouts was previously known as Henry’s Farmers Market before the acquisition that I think was completed sometime in 2011. Thankfully, from my perspective, the store did not suffer in any way in terms of quality and consistency of the natural and organic produce that has been a hallmark  of the retailer for years. It just took us a while to stop calling it Henry’s but everyone knew what was meant. And we know lots of other fans!

Henry's Farmers Market, now Sprouts, in La Costa Carlsbad in 2009

Henry's Now Sprouts in La Costa Carlsbad

We love all the fresh produce that we have here in the Carlsbad area, and often seek things out at the local weekly Farmers Market in the Village, but Sprouts remains at least a weekly stop for organic fruits and vegetables, as well as other products including homeopathic. The pricing is pretty favorable, although it varies as one would expect. And we’ve always found the employees to be very helpful and friendly. We’ve been to probably a dozen Sprouts stores in our travels in SoCal and the consistency is always there. Now that’s a brand I trust!

HYUNDAI

I’m on my second Hyundai in the last 10 years and remain a big fan. Neither car was new, although the first one, despite being a couple years old, was pristine and had very low mileage. We have continued to have our Hyundais serviced at the local dealership, North County Hyundai of Carlsbad, and have always been pleased with their service and the manner in which we have been treated at every appointment, and cars were ready when promised, unless we were called and advised about issues that showed up that could cause a delay. They are good about adivising abtou potential issues but there is no pressure around upselling. Granted my experience is with one dealership but I suspect it's true elsewhere.

The Advantage Club Card they offer provides a discount on service labor and accessory purchases and is a nice-to-have and we use it often – indeed you are permitted to use it as often as you wish until it expires, but then they issue a new one! We’ve had no issues with our Hyundais other than the standard maintenance (tires, brakes) over the years. When it comes time to buy another we will certainly strongly consider Hyundai! Is it a guarantee? No, I want to keep my options open

TRADER JOE’S

We have been loyal fans of Trader Joe’s for many years, probably about 16 now, perhaps longer. In the early years back in Boston, in addition to our own personal shopping, we used Trader Joe’s for providing food and beverages for our art gallery receptions 6 times a year. We laughingly called them Cater Joe’s!! We could always find interesting and healthy items to bring into the gallery, along with a range of beverages, including wine, and we rarely went home after a busy evening with any leftovers, and always received compliments.

The staff is always helpful and friendly and we have always been thrilled with the quality of products, especially their produce. And certainly one favorite, for me at least, at their Peppermint Joe Joe’s at holiday time. OK, I’m a little biased. But they keep up coming back week after week and we’ve never been disappointed.

The central themes for me for all three brands are quality and customer service, something I truly value and strive to always provide in my own business.

This was a fun challenge and interesting to read all the entries about what brands others value and why.

Jeff,

We both love Hyuandai's marketing campaign when they came on the scene in the US.  It was super smart.  We don't have a Sprouts nearby and I have stopped to shop there on our way home from Los Angeles.  And  we have been long time fans of TJ's, when it was owned by Joe Paloma...Thank you for your post, I enjoyed reading it.  A

It is very apparent that food is important to you. Sprouts in OKC is very popular and Trader Joe's is always packed.

Hi Jeff, We love Trader Joe's and Sprouts, too. A few years ago Sprouts bought a local Produce Store, called Sunflower Market, similar to what happened to your Henry's, I guess.

Ha ha Endre Barath, Jr.  I get that. Funny how you go into buy a couple of items and come out after spending $100+!

Hi Jeff - Trader Joes has made a big difference for us since they opened here a year ago - I'm still learning what the really good stuff is (hint: Mandarin orange chicken, frozen croissants, Hatch chile mac & cheese, caramel & cashew cookies). We have a Sprouts right across our parking lot - I'd like it a lot more if the staff were a happier bunch - I've heard the manager is a real jerk. Have a great weekend!

Hi Lauren Selinsky Broker CRS  - the big grocers can be a real challenge in terms of the produce, both quality and pricing!

James Dray  - Maybe some day. They are great stores, but there are others, too!

Funny you should say that Elyse Berman, PA, CRS  Our 20-month-old granddaughter is a HUGE fan of their almond butter, on toast for breakfast!

Hi Kat Palmiotti  - agreed. They have all kinds of stuff that makes life easier, and that is pretty good. You pay for it, of course!

Hi Amanda S. Davidson  - seems like lots of people like TJ's! Too bad about Sprouts.

Raymond E. Camp  - I admit their parking lots can be a bit of a challenge sometimes. There is one here that I hate because the parking is limited and there is too much traffic.

Michael Jacobs - we found Henry's right away when we moved here and never looked back. TJ's seems to be a favorite of many. I have found them very consistent and I have been to many of them.

Ha ha Sandy Padula and Norm Padula, JD, GRI NMLS#1483386  Norm - I'll watch out!!

Nathan Gesner - I find the Hyundai very comfortable. When we got the current on we have the older one to our daughter and husband who now live in LA and really needed a second car!

I believe Sprouts is only on the West Coast Nina Hollander  Too bad.

Hi Rebecca Gaujot  - lots of us are Trader Joe's fans!! I've never had a Lexus but have several friends who do and are die hard Lexus Lovers!!

I, too, loved the Hyundai marketing campaign Ron and Alexandra Seigel but it's the cars and the service that keep me happy.

Yep, food is big on the list Joe Pryor  I'm not fond of TJs at holiday time because of the crowds and try to shop there at off hours whenever I go all year because it's popular. But t's worth it.

Hi Steffy Hristova  - Sounds like you are a big fan, too! It's always interesting to see how the grocery store business changes, with all the acquisitions, etc.

Yes to Trader Joe's, Jeff - a BIG yes! Like you, every time we have an event, the wine and cheese is found at Trader Joe's! LOVE that store!

I've heard great things about Hyundai but, have never owned one. Good to know you're a believer!  As far as Sprouts goes - I've never heard of them but, any place 'fresh' is for me; I'm sure I'd love it if they came to Charlotte!

Have a fantastic weekend!

Hi Dick Greenberg  - I still run across new things I have tried at TJs. Sounds like your Sprouts has a management/culture issue. Too bad, because it impacts the consumer experience in a negative way!

I saw that Robert Bob Gilbert ! I imagine it's on a lot of people's lists!!

Hi Melissa Jackson  - that's too bad. We have 2 Trader Joe's within about 15 minutes of the house, another 20 minutes away, and Sprouts is barely 10.

Yep that's why we used to call it Cater Joe's when we had our Art Gallery back in Boston Debe Maxwell, CRS

TD's has come up several time in the 3 favorite brands. We don't have one close and I rarely get down to Nashville to shop there. I would if it was in Clarksville.

Hi Jeff, hope Sprouts doesn't change Henry's too much.  In our area we had "Natures" that was later purchased by Wild Oats - and they changed it quite a bit (dummies!); and then Whole Foods bought Wild Oats...  I think the Natures founders started "New Seasons" locally after their non-compete ran out, as it feels like we can go back to Natures ones again, thankfully!  TJ is across town, unfortunately thus, we don't get there as often but certainly a brand to trust!  John and Kat
