Just Desserts - What's Your State's Sweet Treat?

Real Estate Broker/Owner with ViewHomes of Clark County - Nature As Neighbors

A multitude of headline teases pop up daily on my MSN home page, normally most are ignored. Yesterday, however, one caught my eye and curiosity, The Most Iconic Dessert From Every State. Logic tells me Washington State, where I live, would likely have something featuring apples. Would neighboring state Oregon have something made with filberts? Indulging myself further, I  wondered if Baked Alaska would be the signature dessert of my original home state of Alaska.

Only one of my guesses was correct, Washington's featured dessert is an Apple Crisp. Oregon's is a Pear Cake and Alaska's is Wild Ligonberry jam on a buttermilk biscuit. Baked Alaska was actually invented by a chef in New York to honor the state's purchase from Russia in 1867. Alaskans enjoy picking wild berries and treasure their berry patches,  often keeping them top-secret.

As for Washington, the choice is obvious. We're known for our sweet apples and lead the nation in Apple production, growing nearly two thirds of all apples in the country. While Oregon is also known for apple production, the pear ranks as the top-selling fruit crop in the state. Although, I wasn't completely wrong on that guess, as the article suggests adding filberts (another treat associated with Oregon) to the Pear cake recipe.

Other state treats that caught my eye include:

California - Frozen Yogurt - California leads the nation with 189 establishments offering the frozen dessert. And, with a body-con population, froyo wins out over ice cream.

Colorado - Yogurt with Granola Parfait - It's a nod to the state's dairy farming and their health-conscious culture.

New Hampshire - Pumpkin Pie - Apparently the pumpkin is listed as the state's official fruit. Add some maple syrup for bonus points - it's another New Hampshire top export.

If you're wondering about a particular state, here's a link to the complete list.

Good morning, Debb and Bernie --- despite our state's "healthy" approach to dessert, I'm sticking with my favorite sweet treat on those rare occasions when I indulge -- cherry pie, thank you.

Aren't you clever this morning Jeff Dowler ? I appreciate your wonderful adjectives for this sweet post. Chocolate is also a favorite of mine. D

Michael Jacobs, Good morning. If so, you might want to head to Michigan. They grow 32 thousand acres of tart cherries which are perfect for making a delish cherry pie.

Hello Debb and Bernie, I like anything with fruit but it's the sweet part I don't like for whatever reason and it has nothing to do with diet, just don't like sweets. When I was a little kid, I would was cake slices under water before eating..go figure. That pie in the photo looks delicious though!

Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD - I've given up sweets but my guess is in TX it has to be Pecan Pie for a sweet dessert. I couldn't find the answer on the link. TX is plentiful when it comes to Pecan Trees and just every restaurant includes Pecan Pie in TX.

I was always a fan of any type of any type of apple dessert; e.g., apple slices, apple pie, apple strudel, baked apples, etc. When apples from the State of Washington came to any part of the country I lived, I always bought Washington apples. There really are the best!

Hi Debb what a fun post!  I have no earthly idea of what the desert would be for AZ. I looked at the link and couldn't find it.  Perhpas is ice cream as it's hot in the summer and we need it!!  I'm not much into deserts but I always like a little bit of dark chocolate on the side!

I would say fruit pies but that is because I love fruit pies, especially the ones my mom used to make.

Debb-What a fun post. I like your state dessert better than mine I think which said it was chess pie. Now Mississippi has a yummy one. Mud Pie. I love anything Apple, lemon or cherry.

What a fun post, I think we may need to move...neither one of us likes frozen yogurt, but give us a good apple pie made with Washington Apples (I capitalize Apple) because it is so good.  A

Debb, I was wondering but you included my state so I wonder no more.  Yogurt shops, like nail salons, are on every corner in San Jose.  Interestingly, I do not consume it.  What a fun read!

Hi Debb & Bernie - That list is highly suspect. I know there are probably some poor misguided souls who think granola & yogurt are a dessert, but I've never seen it on a real restaurant menu, and around here, the people's choice is a beer float. Have a great weekend!

Hi Debb and Bernie- I wasn't surprised to see Key Lime Pie for Florida.  Texas' Mexican Wedding Cookies was a bit surprising and would have thought it might have been Pecan Pie.   I love lists like this one.

Bernie & Debb, have not ever heard of yogurt & granola as a dessert.  I do not enjoy many desserts, but pecan pie at Thanksgiving is a treat!

Debb and Bernie, what a fun post! I'm not a big sweets person but, I do love apple crisp and can see why it's Washington's most iconic dessert. Add a little vanilla ice cream on top and I'm in heaven.

Hi Debb.  It's Key Lime Pie for Florida, but I'm ready to move to any state that will feature a good chocolate mousse.
