If you've heard the news, the Atlanta metro region has a transportation crisis of sorts on our hands!

On Thursday, a fire was started (it has been determined it was intentionally set, and the person has already been arrested) under the I-85 interstate leaving Downtown and Midtown Atlanta, heading North. After 30 minutes of extreme fire, it caused a section of the I-85 freeway to collapse!

(Side note -- this section of I-85 is a bridge for probably a couple miles as it goes over surface streets and such!)

After investigation by Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) engineers on Friday, it was determined that a section of the elevated SOUTHBOUND freeway was damaged, and will have to be replaced as well. We are talking....MONTHS! What does that mean? Ah, take any major city you can think of in the U.S. and cut off one of your major freeways. I've heard 250,000 cars per day, but I think that is one way, as another number is some 400,000 cars pass over this part of I-85 every day.

And now, it does not exist.

I-85 Collapses After FirePeople all over Atlanta are now in scramble mode to figure out how they will get to and from work every day for the foreseeable future....months as we just said. And this problem is not just at this point. As this map shows, traffic is being detoured from North and South. So if you normally drive GA400 from Alpharetta to Downtown, you are now having to take I-285 over to I-75 and then I-75 South into Midtown or Downtown. (You can still get into Buckhead on GA400) But these are all freeways that were already congested with morning commuters. And now you are adding thousands of cars that did not normally go that way.

So that hour commute (and even before this disaster some were longer) are now even longer. Like, think an hour or more longer to get TO AND FROM work each day!

Of course, MARTA, our transit system is now being put to the test. But the metro Atlanta region has faught the expansion of mass transit since...well, the system was first proposed in 1971. (See more information here!)

So, I thought now might be a good time to introduce you to....

Living Near a MARTA Transit Station!

This will be a multi-part series as we focus on the MARTA Transit stations from Downtown Atlanta, North along both the Red Line and the Gold Lines. Here is a map of the MARTA system...and we will focus from Peachtree Center North.

NORTH AVENUE, MIDTOWN AND ARTS CENTER STATION

Midtown Atlanta is fortunate to be serviced by three stations. And from these three stations you have numerous condominum and apartment living options. If you are looking for a single family home, you have Ansley Park as well as Historic Midtown. Ansley Park might be a bit of walk to the station, but could be an easy husband/wife drop off in the morning/evening.

Search Homes For Sale Near Midtown MARTA Station and take a look at all the options you have.

Remember, we can build you a custom search with alerts the moment a new home or condo comes on the market, and tailor it to your needs! Bedrooms, bathrooms, price, features....and find you just the right place to call home, and park your car. Literally!

We will be doing our next post, and will come back here and add links as we focus on each station!

I have been following that disaster and can only imagine the chaos. Time to start riding a bike! Lucky are those who live near a MARTA station.
