Mondays Madness-  Spider Ball-  Fun in Home Inspections

Wenatchee Home Inspections.

Today’s fun is called “Spider Ball”.

As a home and structural pest inspector, I do have to deal with insects. Here was a good looking young lady “Black Widow”.

Black widow spiders (Latrodectus species) typically are pretty scared of me, they are shy creatures.

They are a very common spider in eastern Washington.  Adult female black widows do have potentially dangerous venom, but will often attempt to run away and hide rather than bite.

From Washington State Dept. of Health

Treatment for Spider Bites

  • Wash the bite area with soap and water.

  • Rest and remain calm.

  • Ice the bite area with a cold pack or crushed ice in a bag wrapped in a thin towel. This will reduce swelling and provide pain relief.

  • Compress the bite area to help reduce swelling by wrapping a stretchable bandage around the bite site. Loosen the bandage if it feels too tight or causes throbbing.

  • Elevate the bite area if possible.

  • Do not attempt to remove venom.

  • Seek medical attention immediately if symptoms get worse, don’t go away, or if you suspect a black widow spider bite.

Bring in the spider for identification if possible. This will help determine the best medical treatment. You can preserve the spider for identification by putting it in a small bottle with rubbing alcohol.

Remember you should always have a qualified professional to do your work.

Hiring a qualified home and structural pest inspector to review the home to ensure everything is safe and correct.

I had to check this out even though I personally hate spiders and keep as far as I can from them. Good information to have, just in case.

Jeff, You are not alone. Many do not like spiders.

I actually do not mind them, kinda good because of what I do.

I have found there is more myth than reality when it comes to these creatures.

Years ago I had a house with between 10 and 12 million roaches.  Roaches are a favorite food of black widow spiders, and that house had a few zillion black widows, with eggs everywhere.  'Twas fun, 'twas.

Jay Markanich I tell everyone the reason you have so many spiders is because there is something else there they want to eat. Take away the food source the spiders reduce in numbers.
