 Can families make money owning vs renting near a University? I think the answer is yes. Can families loose money if they invest in the wrong type of property or the market crashes in 4 years. I think the answer is yes.

I think buying real estate for a student is a personal choice that has both risk and rewards and each of these need to explored before you purchase.

It can be a great way to offset living expenses if your child can be trusted to watch out for the property while in school.  There is an inherent danger in renting out the rooms in the house to his/her best beer buddies during college.  JS.
