All I Ask Is That You Respect My Time

I was thinking about writing about this when I came across Kathellen Daniels' contest post No Fooling Around.

I work hard for my clients whether they be buyers or renters. (Don't laugh, we can make some nice income from renters in Los Angeles, given the commission structure and high rental rates.) However in return I do expect my time to be treated with respect.

I had a buyer once who if they were half an hour late they thought they were early. They ended up buying so I bore with it.

Rentals, as lucrative as they might be, consume around the same amount of time as the purchase process. However the level of respect many renters have for our time is minimal. I cannot count the number of times I have spend countless hours and gas driving renters around only to have them disappear without so much as a thank you.

Also, you can show up late for an appointment once, but do it a second time, especially when you have been advised not to, and you will be looking for someone else to help you find a rental in this extremely low-inventory market. Arriving half an hour late without so much as a phone call wastes not only my time but the listing agent. Yes, in Los Angeles listing agents often show rentals.

I wonder if renters had to pay for the service we provide they would show some more respect. I am not sure how they think we are being compensated for all the time we spend with them often without any results, and even worse, their lack of appreciation for it.

Again, I work hard for my clients. The only thing I ask, especially from renters, is that you show me some respect. That doesn't cost anything.

Jane, I hope lots of buyers and renters read this post and realize how hard real estate agents work for them and that we deserve to be treated with respect concerning our time and our treatment.

We are the Rodney Dangerfields of the business world as we just don't get any respect!

Jane Peters you know you are preaching to the choir with me on this one! But your rental commissions ARE better! But, the respect still needs to be there. When I am showing my own rental listings, if a prospective tenant is late, that's like a late rent check.

Even if you set the expectations, they still will walk over us. I don't blame you for saying "See ya....." when they do it again!

Hi Jane

Expecting tenants, buyers, and other agents to be respectful of our time is very reasonable. Yep, things happen that are outside our control, but some people just seem to not care about being on time nor how this might impact others! Bravo for this post!

Jane, This rubs me too in all aspects of the business (and life)! I understand things happen. Sometimes people are held up and late almost beyond their control. Some people are just always late. They are inconsiderate and do not deserve our time.  These days I am more than happy to let those folks find someone else to work with.

Thank you for participaing in the contest.

R-E-S-P-E-C-T ... that's all we want is just a Little Respect!  Boy you hit it out of the park on that one Jane Peters ... we plan and live our life on a schedule and understand and respect other's time but it is not always reciprocated.  I have had this happen to me as well and we have to either bite our tongue or if we say something it can turn around and burn us because they then just walk away and find another Realtor looking to get disrespected.  Gotta be thankful that most clients are not like that, but are very respectful and considerate of our time.

My MO is I give clients 5 minutes leeway. If they aren't on time, I call, and if I get V/M, I text to ask if they are running late. I make them respect my time. If they get annoyed because I texted them, they can make some other agent's life miserable. If they don't respond, I wait 15 minutes and leave.

Bruce Walter Too true.

Thom Abbott If we don't respect ourselves, who will.

Jeff Dowler Thank you. I don't mind if it happens once, but three times in a row. You just know how the rest of the relationship will go.

Kathleen Daniels Thank you for giving me the opportunity to vent.

Hannah Williams That's all I ask.

Diana Dahlberg Yes, thank goodness these people are in the minority. I am happy to let them go. In fact I am usually the one who leaves.

Elizabeth Weintraub Sacramento Real Estate Agent, Top 1% of Lyon Agents  Good for you. The icing on the cake is when they don't even call to say they are running late. It just amazes me.

A lack of respect for our time, is an important factor.  I sometime get it that clientele doesn't understand, but when it is another agent, it can be maddening!
