Tips for Painting Your House

Spring is finally here! This typically entails the start of longer days, and of course spring cleaning. But we can’t forget that maybe it is also time to give your house an updated look with a fresh coat of paint.

First and foremost, it is important that you choose the right color. Keep in mind each color may look different in certain rooms; it all depends on how much natural light comes in. Consider the lighting in the store when selecting a color; it may look a shade darker or lighter at the store as opposed to when it’s on your wall. If you want to play it safe, buy a sample quart of each color you are considering. This will allow you to test the colors on a small section of your wall and determine which one you like best. Also keep in mind that dark colors in a small room will make the room look smaller, so try to stick with brighter or neutral tones.

The second thing you want to consider is the finish for your walls. There are a few types of finishes to select from: flat, satin (also known as eg-shel) and semi-gloss. What finish you select generally depends on what room you plan to paint. Use a flat finish for dining rooms, formal living rooms and adult bedrooms. A satin finish works for high traffic areas of the house such as halls, children’s bedrooms and family rooms. Using a semi-gloss finish is perfect for walls that will get cleaned regularly such as kitchens, bathrooms and closet doors.

Once you have decided what color and finish you want, you will want to make sure you are using the proper tools to paint. For smaller surfaces, using a paint brush will be most convenient. But for larger surfaces, a roller will be more useful. Just remember, the greater the surface area, the bigger the brush or roller should be. You should properly clean and prime the walls beforehand to ensure that there is proper coverage and that the previous paint doesn’t show through the new coat of paint. Also, make sure to cover any furniture and floors so nothing gets stained.

Once you allow adequate time for the paint to dry, make sure to hang up some nice wall art to compliment your new colored walls! Now you can enjoy this lovely spring with a clean house and freshly updated walls!
