With Air Travel patience is a virtue

So getting up at 4:00 AM in the morning without a cup of coffee is how we spend our travel mornings when we go to our place in Jupiter Florida. Having traveled a lot I can verify that every airline has their time in the bullring and today's democratized travel has its rewards but also its frustrations. Today was one of those days. it started with a 50 minute delay in Oklahoma City for lack of pilots for the plane because they got in so late the night before for a weather delay and are required to sleep so many hours. Now many were mad and they has missed connections the night before but for me, I would rather someone flying a big plan in traffic has their sleep. The good news is they got in 10 minutes earlier so Charlene and I could make a run for our next flight out of Atlanta for West Palm Beach.

We were greeted with disappointment because that plane not only had no pilots it also had no flight attendants and they were stuck in Dallas. I watched people go up to the counter and get angry with the desk lady and this makes me extremely mad. I have had clients mad at me and call the office and ream out the receptionist but when they talked to me they were polite. Cowards treat hired help that way and I think of it as abuse. Meanwhile we are conversing with 3 experienced flyer's and telling each other bad experiences now laughable and saying what are you going to do, you can control the weather or fate. Meanwhile we are helping each other out and my wife who is the best person to travel with on the planet rushes back to the gate after looking for the Sky Lounge saying Daytona Beach has space! One lady who had bee stranded for 4 days, that how bad Atlanta was, and the rest of us rushed to the Daytona Gate.

So here is the moral of the story and of course it would be flying with my wife is a good thing but I digress. Instead of yelling at employees about Delta's profit or taking it out on someone who has to take it, try humor and kindness. We talked to the front desk person and we told her she deserves a raise and we were grateful that people like her cared about us. So what was the result? We were put in first class, and then after a three hour drive we are here. All in all a tiring and long day and we didn't just ride on silver wings, we rode on kindness, and made friends because we cared about them too.

Joe sometimes I've been behind those 'bad behavior' folks in airports and I do my best to cheer up the folks that just got chewed out. Glad you made it....

When others are treated poorly, they turn off and dig in.  Treat people with respect and you break down the barriers that other non-respectful people have helped to raise.  Nice post Joe.

I love to travel Joe and I must say that the only part of it that I don't like is the transportation portion - I have met some really nasty airline personnel and I wonder why they do this job-it must be frustrating and you must develop a thick skin - but the customer is not always right and treating people with respect is tantamount.  The problem is that while we travel, we feel so out of control of our circumstances which often causes major meltdowns amongst travellers.

Moral of the story do not take early flights Joe, that way you can have your  coffee, leisurely get to the Airport late morning early afternoon and by that time they got their stuff in order:))Endre

Whether you get a bump to first class or not, service people deserve our respect. I hate seeing them take the brunt of complaints knowing they had nothing to do with the delays.

Joe Pryor I travel a lot - at least 4 times a year if not more - and I know, sometimes the plane is ready and the pilot is not! And sometimes, it's other way round.

Good morning Joe.  I'll be making two flights this year.  One to Maine and another to North Carolina.  I'll be leaving two days early for the one to North Carolina.

Good morning, Joe... there's a reason that old expression "you catch more flies with honey than vinegar" exists. Flying certainly isn't what it used to be and I dread it... have a trip coming up in June to Colorado for our grandson's wedding and the thought of even a direct flight to Denver already has me crazed.

When I was a kid, air travel was considered a kind of luxurous event.  Folks dressed up for it.  Now, if you fly anywhere, you can forego your annual physical.  There's Xrays, a pat down, and if you raise suspicions, you can darn near get a colonoscopy!

Good morning Joe. Glad you are safely in Florida. I agree with you: screaming at people is rude and stupid.

Hi Joe- I read about Delta's issues.  You handled it well.  There's no sense in making everyone else miserable!

You make an excellent point. people who yell at the customer service people working for the airline and throw tantrums are totally out of line. No one can control the weather. Delays  are part of flying to any destination these days. Have fun on your trip..

So happy to hear you made it to Florida Joe Pryor but what a shame that other passengers could not deal with the delay issues with the same grace you exhibited.

Travelling today is an interesting sport.  Will you leave on time?  Is bad weather going to delay your flight?  Is there a strike somewhere?  Someone getting dragged off the flight?

Have to expect that the trip won't go as planned and then you'll be pleasantly surprised when it does and not as upset when it doesn't.
